Cahireen1, the name of the farm where the Lucey family lived in Co. Cork is approximately seven miles north-west of Macroom, the market town where the farm's produce, including butter and livestock, were sold and the household commodities purchased. Although the official title of the townland was Baratanaknock, the family members were known as "Cahireens" because of a fort, or cahir, which was situated on the land from earliest times.
Cornelius, known more familiarly as "Conny Cahireen" was easy-going and affable, tall and well built, and was considered to be very good looking. He was also reputed to be an athlete of some ability, and in an anecdotal reference to this, his son, John, once reported that:
... his ability to run served a very useful purpose when a man-hunt had been arranged to catch a dangerous lunatic who was ranging about the locality in possession of a large cleaver knife. Conny was the first to catch up with the man and hold him until the others came up, even though the knife had been driven through his hand by the lunatic. The Police present wanted him [Conny] to join them and offered him early promotion but he would not.
He loved horses and would have only the very best. A good horse for saddle or cart was a necessity for the farmer if his prestige was not to suffer, because his neighbours would so often challenge him to a road race after weddings or funerals or when coming home from fairs or markets. Conny Cahireen never believed in being last on such occasions!
Julia Kelleher, his wife, daughter of Seán (John) Andreas and Julia (née Healy), came from a family of nine children—four boys and five girls. She grew up at Cahirkearna near Ballyvourney where her father owned five substantial farms. Julia has been described as small, but virile, and a highly competent housekeeper.
She reportedly won three first prizes for butter-making at an Agricultural Show at Clondrohid—first in churn butter, first in separator butter, and first for the best butter at the show.
Both of Julia's parents were dealt a severe blow in their old age: her father lost a leg after a horse riding accident and her mother was badly burnt in the home. Julia, herself, met an early death in 1904 at the age of 47 years.
Complications arising from appendicitis (peritonitis), which at that time was incurable, deprived the young family of their mother. Julia is buried at St Gobnait's cemetery, Ballyvourney, Co Cork.
After Julia's untimely death, Hanora, or "Nora" as she was known, the second daughter of the family, took on the role of "mother". She was well remembered for the efficient way in which she ran the house and farm, caring and providing for nine younger brothers and sisters, down to Humphrey (“Free”), the youngest child, who was then less than six months old.
*Just when the name of Cahireen came into being and applied to the farm land and house is unknown at this stage.

1. In 1876 a list of landowners who held at least one acre of land was published. The survey had been commissioned in 1873 by the Local Government Board and required the Poor Law Unions across Ireland to gather together lists of landowners from local rate books. The last of the returns to the Board was dated November 1872. When collated, some 32,614 owners were listed alphabetically by province and county, alongside details of the extent of their land and its current valuation. Henry Harding (see below) was, at this time, the owner of extensive lands, including the land being farmed by the Lucey family.
