Please note that Dungeon Madness is entirely optional and you do not need to follow the official lore nor do you need to use it in your story at all! All Pokémon with Dungeon Madness can receive the mark (🔴) no matter which stage they are on.
Mystery dungeons have been a recurring phenomena in Kogranar since the beginning of time. However, due to some unknown reasons, the transformation of some of Kogranar's beloved locations into dangerous dungeons have accelerated along with the huge influx of entities from other worlds into the land. Some dungeons, such as the Ancient Cave, have been mystery dungeons since the beginning of time. Others, such as Flora Village's beloved Freevie Forest & Flashflame Tunnel have very recently become mystery dungeons. This causes a lot of the villages all around Kogranar to be better equiped to deal with them, as well as the Pokémon that come out of them...
Mystery dungeons seem to cause the Pokémon living in them to slowly lose reason before eventually becoming as wild as an animal, only running off instinct. Some Pokémon transform into monsters if exposed to high levels of magic in certain dungeons, though this is not very well documented as of now. It is typically recommended to leave those mystery dungeons as quickly as possible, as no one knows how long it takes for a Pokémon to lose their memories & reason and give in to the madness. Due to this, rescue missions are often urgent, as numbers mean everything in a situation where the world is slowly falling into chaos.
As things worsen in Kogranar, dungeons are not the only areas affected with this phenomena. The closer an area is to the Heart of Kogranar, the worse the madness becomes. For now, this is called “Village Madness”, however all Pokémon know this is part of the Dungeon Madness. When a village or an area is affected by this, it is typically encouraged to evacuate, though some Pokémon are crazy enough to embrace the madness and use it to their advantage. Those often are avoided for security reasons.
Unfortunately, with the phenomena becoming more and more common, more outlaws with the intention of inflicting dungeon madness to the innocent have been spotted all around Kogranar. Perhaps you can be the one helping with taking them down...
EXTRA ON ANTI-DUNGEON EQUIPMENT
Anti-Dungeon Madness Equipment are in the form of wearables such as scarves & glasses and can also be in the form of berries. These have all been blessed by Ethereal or/and Godly traited Pokémon who typically are either immune to Dungeon Madness or have become part of it and know how to counter it.
It is known that Myth's Circle members all carry these equipments but tend to be fairly selfish and don't typically share them with others that are below them. However, there are Pokémon out there such as Morgan & Adonis who carry these equipment and are often willing to lend them these equipments if proven to be worthy in their eyes.
It is also possible to dye existing equipment with anti-dungeon madness berries to help combat the progression of dungeon madness, although it is known to be a lot less efficient than using the help of other Pokémon.
STAGES OF DUNGEON MADNESS
Dungeon Madness manifests in 4 stages, Stage 1 being the least severe & Stage 4 being the “point of no return” as it currently stands. It is not contagious nor hereditary, how prone a Pokémon is to Dungeon Madness depends on their character, their previous experiences & their emotional strength. While most cases of Dungeon Madness go from Stage 1 to 4, there has been exceptions, usually magic-induced or from sudden immense exposure to dungeon madness as a terrible magical energy, where a Pokémon has been inflicted directly with Stage 3 or 4 Madness.
This is the least severe stage which can easily be reversed. Often, these Pokémon end up moving towards danger despite knowing that their life can end. Typically, exposure to a dungeon for a few hours causes this to happen to a Pokémon, hence the recommendation of leaving as quickly as possible.
Physically, though, nothing changes. They are still the same beloved Pokémon everyone knows, just with a certain Appel du Vide briefly controlling their actions for a bit.
It is assumed that all Pokémon required to be rescued are either close to being affected or are affected by Stage 1 Madness, hence the urgency to rescue them as soon as possible.
Fortunately, Stage 1 Madness usually goes away fairly quickly after leaving a dungeon.
If a Pokémon stays in a dungeon (or multiple dungeons) for too long (typically ~1 week) without proper emotional support or/and preparation in the form of Anti-Dungeon Madness equipment, their Stage 1 Madness evolves into a Stage 2. Most Pokémon by this point start to struggle to trace the line between their allies & enemies, but still retain the memories of their past. Not only that, they tend to be more prone to attacking other Pokémon more violently, rather than aiming for the Pokémon to temporarily faint, they may end up killing the Pokémon entirely.
This can still be reversed with the help of teammates that know the affected Pokémon’s favorite things, such as items, words, food, habits, etc. This helps them remember who they used to be and can make them snap out of their Madness. This does require some experience, as Pokémon with Stage 2 Madness can still be dangerous to their own allies and can end up biting them.
Physically, some Pokémon’s eyes may gain dark sclera, claws & sharp teeth, though this is more common with Pokémon in later stages. It’s also common for these Pokémon to start drooling uncontrollably.
A Pokémon that has been in a dungeon for several weeks without proper emotional support or/and preparation or dealing with certain magical events will see their Stage 2 Madness advance into Stage 3. These Pokémon start to see allies & enemies as equals in the way that they will start targeting anything that moves no matter their relationship with them. They are also notorious for adopting very cannibalistic behavior as well as being incredibly brutal with killing Pokémon around them.
It is incredibly difficult to bring a Pokémon in Stage 3 back to their senses by this point, especially with them not distinguishing allies from enemies at all. Though, if one is lucky, they may still retain faint memories of their loved ones and may be able to be snapped back to normal if defeated and knocked down then given the missing emotional support before they snap back into their frenzy. Usually, Godly Pokémon have a higher chance of bringing a Stage 3 Maddened Pokémon back to normal.
Not only do these Pokémon gain dark sclera, claws & sharp teeth, they may also gain an entirely monstrous form; usually at least twice as tall as the Pokémon’s previous form. Their skin and flesh start to deform, giving place to extra limbs, extra eyes & mouths, tentacle-like tendrils & pure insanity in the eyes. By this point, the shape of the previous Pokémon may be very, very hard to recognize. Stage 3 Maddened Pokémon are usually bestowed the Ethereal trait or the Delta(???) trait by that point, but it is still possible to retain all traits while in Stage 3.
This is the point of no return. If a Pokémon has Stage 4 Madness, they can’t be turned back to normal and are doomed to live the life of a wild monster ready to tear everything apart, no matter how big or small they are. These Pokémon prefer their monstrous form which allows them to feed on other living beings easily. These Pokémon have insatiable hunger, doomed to feed on all life until the end of time.
These Pokémon typically get called “Dungeon Madness itself” due to them fully “embracing” Dungeon Madness as a part of themselves.
In certain cases, Pokémon in this stage can control themselves and act like their previous selves, usually if they are an Ethereal or a Godly Pokémon, as they’ve gotten used to the inner madness caused by Kogranar itself. However, their true monstrous selves will manifest during certain emotional events or even at will, sometimes.
These Pokémon tend to lose their essence as a Pokémon entirely, adopting a much more Eldritch & otherworldly behavior & appearance. They were forced to sacrifice their mortal Pokémon-like body to the madness to become Dungeon Madness itself. Stage 4 Madness Pokémon are also the only ones known to be able to spread the madness at will.
STAGE 5/FINAL - RAGNARÖK'S MARIONETTES
STAGE FINAL DUNGEON MADNESS ARE MARKED WITH A 👁️🗨️ INSTEAD OF 🔴.
It is currently unobtainable in gameplay. Unlockable after Phase 3 Part 2 (ETA ~April 2026).
Stage 1 to 4 are the most rampant around Kogranar, with Stage 4 Dungeon Madness mainly appearing in certain dungeons such as Death's Garden, Blood-Red Beach, Treacherous Battlefield & Field of Sin. Stage 1-3 are fairly common in most other dungeons. So far, knowledge on Dungeon Madness are limited to Stage 1-4. However, those in the Heart of Kogranar have to deal with a 5th stage, which is also called "Stage Final" or "Ragnarök's Marionettes" due to the fact that Ethereal & Godly Pokémon that have been in Kogranar for thousands of years can feel the strings of Ragnarök itself. Many believe that those Pokémon have "ascended" and don't have a mind of their own anymore. Pokémon used as puppets by the Beast itself, that's what they are.
In other words, Stage 5 Madness can only be attained by Pokémon with direct contact with the Beast of Kogranar...
And those who are the Beast of Kogranar or are fused directly with it.
