Contented volunteers after their work
On the 4th of November, Patrols 3 (Dove) and 4 (Owl) went to the Butterfly Habitat @ Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and volunteered to maintain the plants that were there. This was part of their yearly VIA (Values-In-Action) projects, which focus on contributing back to the community and picking up important values along the way.
Although it was early in the morning, everyone including Mr Ng, our teacher in charge, showed up eagerly to help out. We met up near the shed, where we took our attendance and got briefed on what we were supposed to do.
After receiving gardening gloves from Mr Ng, we proceeded to the designated areas where we were tasked to trim the plants to make them look more presentable and remove the weeds. Apart from that, we also had to sweep the dead leaves and trim plants, which were disposed of afterwards.
With the help of the tools, we were able to start trimming the plants and got to work!
After trimming the plants, there were a lot of leaves and branches on the ground. Therefore, some of us took the rake and swept the floor.
When we were done with our designated areas, we were told that we we were fast, and had time to go to other areas of the park and maintain the plants there. Although we were already exhausted, with determination, we continued and brought the tools there.
After realising that there were a lot of dead leaves in that area, we swept and gathered all of them together, making it easier for us to dispose them of. As it was already time to pack up and leave shortly after we were done disposing of the dead leaves, we took a group photo and proceeded back home.
This VIA project is invaluable and taught us the simple techniques of horticulture maintenance. We have also interacted with strangers along the way and made that weekend a fruitful one.
Here is a look at how the plants looked before and after we maintained them:
After reading about how you can contribute to the society when you join Scouts, I hope you are eager to join us!
