Magitech

The purpose of this summary is to provide an out-of-character (OOC) explanation of Magical Technology (Magitech) in the world of Origins of Sin, Sincadere. Magitech  serves as a connection between magic and science. It is not meant to limit or hinder any individual's roleplay. Instead, it serves as a creative tool to inspire world-building, enhance storytelling, and offer opportunities for character development.

Magitech

The following is general information regarding Magitech on Origins of Sin

What is Magitech?

Any personal item that is crafted to perform a standard spell or ability that would otherwise be achieved by a spell-caster or enchanted item, using a mana-infused power source. Magitech ranges from artisanal creations such as magical weapons and equipment, to standardized house-hold items such as mana-powered lights and heaters.

At its largest, Magitech has produced leyline-fed Generators capable of powering entire Kingdoms and magical barriers able to withstand dragons.

Magitech lives where the lines blur between magic and science.

Advantages of Magitech

Properly designed Magitech is accessible and can easily be utilized by most people: regardless of their own abilities in magic.

Magitech can effectively be batch produced, making it the economical choice for higher volume orders and larger scale projects such as city infrastructure.

While an enchanted item may be stripped of its magic by spells such as “Dispel Magic”, Magitech is engineered and will thus retain its mechanical function.

Instead, any attempt to remove the magic will drain or deplete the mana-infused power source and temporarily render the item ineffective. This can quickly be remedied by swapping the power source for another.

Style Guide

A common misconception with Magitech in Sincadere is basing it visually on Steampunk. This is not appropriate to the technology level of the world and thus should be avoided.

Please remember that in Sincadere, magic is a prominent source of energy.

Lean into the concept of applying magic and science, whilst using facilities and resources available in the setting.

Wood is a versatile material to work with. Metal is still forged and shaped by Blacksmiths. Gems and crystals make excellent conduits.

Magitech versus Enchantment

Magitech and enchantments share certain similarities, but they also possess distinct characteristics that set them apart. In traditional terms, enchantment involves imbuing magical properties onto an item either during its creation or afterwards. On the other hand, Magitech revolves around the art of engineering items to harness mana and perform specific magical functions. The key differences lie in the methodology and application.

For instance, an enchanted sword can be infused with fire, causing flames to manifest when drawn and used in an attack. In contrast, a Magitech sword can be constructed to spark and ignite the blade through the infusion of mana, resulting in flames that can be summoned at will. Functionally, both examples yield a similar outcome—an enhanced weapon empowered by magic.

The fundamental distinction between Enchantment and Magitech lies in the utilization of Mana as a source of power, in contrast to the arcane energy traditionally employed.

Common Mistakes for Magitech

Victorian Era

General and dark fantasy, or any period clothing up until the 15th century.

For more information about aesthetics please see our Technology Page.

Metal Gears/Pistons

Gears have been used throughout history. They are commonly made of wood in Sincadere.

Pistons are not used due to a lack of combustion engines and pressure systems.

Steam Powered

No combustion or pressure systems exist in Sincadere.

Steam power isn’t needed as mana can be used as a fuel source. Instead, consider using a magical glow.

Clockwork Parts

Intricate clockwork parts and machines based on designs from the 17th century should be avoided.

You can take inspiration from the Antikythera mechanism, for intricate design.
