Thumb Glissando
Lesson 4
Lesson 4
Goal:
Achieve a seamless legato by using the tip and base of the thumb as though they were two separate fingers.
Instructions:
Select the following stops on your organ:
Great: Diapason 8 (Principal 8) and Octave 4 (Prestant 4)
Watch the demonstration video for each exercise and practice the technique as shown.
Use both the tip and base of the thumb to transition smoothly between notes.
Begin by playing a key with the tip of the thumb while keeping the wrist in its natural position.
In one fluid motion, lower the wrist slightly, allowing the base of the thumb to take over the same key. At the same time, extend the thumb tip forward to prepare for the next note.
Raise and lower the wrist only as much as needed to free the tip or base of the thumb—keep movements economical and controlled.
Daily Practice Recommendation:
Practice for 5 minutes a day. Daily repetition will develop muscle memory, control, and confidence in this technique.
For this exercise first practice the hands separately and then put them together.
