This Leffel Turbine, cast in 1868 was used here at Metamora Mill to power the gristmill. Today it stands as a part of the history of the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site

The waters from the Whitewater Canal hit the undershot water wheel

and the energy from the drive shaft is transferred to the milling equipment from the power house located in the basement.

Undershot Waterwheel

The wheel turns the sluice gate.

The sluice gate opens the waters from the Whitewater Canal.

The water then hits against the undershot water wheel which in turn powers the main drive shaft.

The undershot water wheel at Metamora Mill, Indiana is located in Lock #25 of the Whitewater Canal. Previously the mill used a Leffel Turbine to power the milling equipment. The Indiana State Museum took possession of this canal, aquaduct and mill site in 1945. Subsequently, the historic Metamora site has been upgraded, improved and now the canal functions with visitors on the canal boats and the mill authentically grinds corn and sells it to customers.
