This year, the Nyack girls basketball team proved how hard work and determination can change a season, being undefeated in their league and having a 14-1 record.
A major turning point in their season was their win against Clarkstown South, their biggest rival school. After that win, the team knew the season would be different.
This year, girls basketball has won 14 games and lost only one against Irvington, a non-league team, meaning that Nyack still has a chance to win their league title. While their one loss was tough, the team has turned it around and used it as motivation for getting to the playoffs.
“Our one loss brought us down and we lost some confidence, but we knew we had to work past that to reach our end goals of winning the league,” said player Mady Peskie.
A huge factor in their success has been improvement on and off the court of their playing and team chemistry. Last year, defense was one of their weaker areas, and they ended their season earlier than they had hoped. This year, their defense has been stronger and more aggressive, leading to better offensive plays. Their ball movement and communication has also improved drastically, winning them more points. Individually, players have also stepped up. Maya Corneil recalls how she has gained more confidence in handling the ball and her playing in general this season. Many players have improved their shooting skills and defense over all, showing how much growth and work they have put in this season.
Team chemistry has also made a huge difference. Compared to last year, the girls say that they have built a stronger bond and are more supportive of each other.
“I think we really trust each other and feel safe with each other,” said player Rikaya Mohammed.
Another key factor in the team's success has been leadership. Captain Casey Cummings has played a huge role in keeping the team motivated. Teammates describe her as reliable both on and off the field. Her pep talks throughout the season have helped push the team through challenges and helped them stay focused.
With only one more game left before playoffs, the team is more than ready. After missing out last year, they are focused on winning.
“We are determined to go to County Center and win our league,” said player Maya Corniel.
Players Mady, Rakiya, and Maya have asked for more support during games. So far, crowds have mostly shown up for senior games, but as the team potentially heads to playoffs with confidence, this is the moment for their fans to show up and support the team that has worked all season for this opportunity. Nyack girls basketball will continue to make their community proud through the playoffs, both in their biggest game at County center and beyond.
