As the weather gets colder, excitement is building across Nyack High School for the start of the winter sports season. This year, athletes in girls’ and boys’ basketball, ski, bowling, fencing, boys swimming, and winter track are entering the season with renewed focus and high expectations.
While each sport has its own pace and training style, a common theme has emerged among all teams: determination. From sweat inducing basketball practices to late afternoon track conditioning sessions, athletes across the board have been working consistently to prepare for a competitive winter. This year’s preseason energy feels stronger than in previous years, with many athletes putting in extra time to sharpen their skills. Teams have emphasized conditioning, communication, and discipline: key elements they hope will carry them far into the season.
The winter track team has been one of the first to settle into its training rhythm. With athletes ranging from sprinters to distance runners to field competitors, the team has spent the past several weeks focusing on endurance, technique, and strength. According to the team’s head coach, Edgar Lambert, the group’s motivation is at an all time high. He noted that this season’s roster shows an impressive blend of returning athletes ready to improve on last year’s performances and newcomers eager to prove themselves. The overall message to the team this year has been simple: put in steady effort and trust that progress will follow. Lambert believes this mindset will be key as athletes begin facing tougher meets in December.
Both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams have entered the new season with growing confidence. The girls’ team has focused on communication and cohesion, hoping to build on last year’s successes with a stronger sense of unity on the court. Meanwhile, the boys’ team is working hard to build a fast paced, high energy offense that can compete with conference rivals.
Beyond the court and track, other winter sports are also preparing for notable seasons. The ski team is ready to hit the slopes with a technically skilled group of athletes who have spent the fall honing balance, agility, and speed. The bowling team, often underrated but always reliable, returns with a roster known for steady skills and teamwork. Meanwhile, the fencing team has been sharpening their footwork and form in anticipation of early season matches. With a mix of experienced athletes and new talent, the team is aiming to surprise opponents and gain more recognition within the school community.
With so many teams entering the season well prepared and hopeful, students and staff have plenty to look forward to. The winter sports season offers opportunities not just for athletic success, but also for community support and school pride. Whether it’s cheering in the gym, watching a meet, or supporting athletes on the sidelines, this winter promises to be filled with energy, growth, and memorable moments for all.
