As we make the steady shift from autumn to winter, exchange falling leaves for frozen flurries of snow, and finally take our jackets off their hooks, the Rockland Road Runners swap their everyday shoes for running sneakers in preparation for the highly anticipated Snowflake 5K. On the morning of December 28th, at 10:00 AM, the air horn will blow, and runners will embark on a race through a smooth and tranquil course alongside the Hudson. The scenic route will guide them from the starting line, located in front of the North Midland Ambulance Corps.
Tucked tightly between the end of the holiday season and New Year’s Day, the walk/run event is a great way to not only celebrate in the warm company of friends and family, but also to show appreciation for the unsung heroes of our community. While the race might be cold, its intentions are quite the opposite. As stated by Bill Carpenter, the president of the Rockland Road Runners organization, over a conversation via email, the proceeds of the race are dedicated to supporting local community service-based organizations such as the Nyack Community Ambulance Corps, Grace’s Kitchen, and the Soup Angels Soup Kitchen. So, whether you plan to run or walk, you’re guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face and a proud accomplishment from your pocket.
Upon finishing the race, runners and walkers will be welcomed back to the starting location with hot chocolate, apple cider, and an assortment of other refreshments and treats. Still need another reason to register? The top three male and female finishers of their respective age groups will even be awarded with medals!
So, do you enjoy light-hearted athletic activities and like the idea of supporting your community? If so, the Rockland Road Runners’ Snowflake 5K is the event for you. Registration, which includes an exclusive package, complete with a race bib, pins, and a unisex cotton long-sleeve shirt, closes the day of the event. While registration costs $38.10 for adult participants, registration for participants aged 12-15 costs $27.50. Both prices include a $3.10 fee. However, registration is free for kids aged 1-11. Slots for registration are limited, so if you’re interested in participating, you can enter the race in person or online using this link: https://runsignup.com/Race/Register/?raceId=5929&eventId=1062031
