Picture this: You are walking through town with your Pumpkin Spice Latte, stepping on crunchy leaves, looking for a store to enter. And as many residents know and love, Halloween in Nyack is as festive as can be. What gives Nyack its famous Halloween spirit? Courtesy of the Nyack Middle School and Nyack High School art programs, the windows on Main Street and Broadway are painted with spooky scenes of Halloween.
At the beginning of every fall, the Nyack art department announces a theme for the annual window painting trip. Then, students sketch an idea and propose it to an art teacher, who carefully selects the perfect pieces to be painted in Main Street and Broadway’s store windows. Last year’s theme was New York, and this year’s theme is Monster Music.
So far, Nyack High School students have begun to murmur questions like, “What will you paint on your window if you get chosen?” and, “Do you think I will get picked to paint my window idea?” It is interesting to hear that most students are hopeful to soon demonstrate their artistic abilities to the fullest on their window. Being involved in decorating our town with festive windows shows dedication to one’s artwork and community.
If you are taking an art class this year and are participating in this activity, make sure to have fun! Think outside of the box and try your best to stay creative. It is clear that residents all over Nyack are eager to observe the spooky pieces of art coming their way this Halloween.
