The leaves have changed and the wind has blown across Redhawk Nation, ushering in a new season; it is a new start for winter teams looking to pave their way towards a scintillating run to glory. But first, we wind back to take a look at the highlights of the 2022 Nyack Varsity Fall Season!
Ready, Set, Spike! The Nyack Volleyball team, having lost a chunk of seniors last year, were under new leadership this season, shifting from coach Christian Collazo to Coach Brenna Abplanalp. While the coaching transition was a big change, what didn't change was their success, as they yet again made a late-season run to earn a playoff spot. Though they started with a dissatisfying 2-5 record, they finished a contender in the Section 1 Quarterfinals. In the end, they dropped to Lakeland on the road. Congratulations to Senior Isabella Meyo and Junior Brooke Jordan for winning All-League Honors as well as Stephanie Borelli for winning the Most Improved Player award.
Serve it, Smash it, Win it! It was yet another captivating run for the Girls Tennis Team. Led by Senior Captain Alex Friedland, the Redhawks finished 9-2, second in the league. Congrats to both Kate and Ella Gould for receiving All-Section Honors!
The waters have been friendly for the Redhawk girls, who dominated the section championships this past week. Placing eighth out of 28 teams and setting a new school record for best all time, key contributions were made by Madison Milla, Alex Fox, Cornelia Fox, and eighth grader Katie Place. Cornelia Fox then went on to become the New York State Champion in the 100 Freestyle (first time since 1940 for Nyack)!
Senior Leadership was a key factor in the success of the field hockey team this season. Despite a 4-11-1 record, the team was able to hold their own in a competitive battle, ultimately dropping to Rye despite what were great performances. Seniors Emily Fidalgo and Tess Dizzine, Junior Kayla Crai, Sophomore Mia Gilbart, and Freshman Goalie Emily Rodriguez all received All-League Honors!
Speaking of senior leadership... Lina Dillon, Talia Spatz, Grace Delaney, Eve McGrogan, and Nayeli Melendez led yet another successful year on the soccer field. Their efforts rewarded them yet another playoff spot, losing a tight game to Hendrick Hudson.
Nyack Boys Soccer continued their impressive reign by yet again qualifying for the playoffs, finishing at a consistent 9-7 record, led by all-league players Freddie Hurson, Zane Stone, Xavier Kamba and Jackson Martinez. Following a 5-1 upset win on the road at #2 Eastchester, the boys dropped a close game, getting shutout 1-0 in the quarterfinals by rival Tappan Zee. Congratulations to all-section senior Xavier Kamba, and all-section honorable mention Freddie Hurson!
The efforts on the trails went the distance this fall as Nyack Cross Country had yet another season for the ages! Luke Roy earned the sixth fastest Bear Mountain competition time in Nyack history, running a 16:38, while Lucas Berg ran a 18:09 at the Bowdoin meet, the tenth fastest in Nyack history. Both Roy and Berg took home all-league honors. Congratulations to Serafin Maier, who also took home the coaches award for Girls Cross Country.
The boys of football closed out their fall campaign with a sound 39-0 thumping over Ramapo High School. Seniors Michael Fowler, Ryan LaPierre and Eric Bullard stood out, ensuring that they would not end the season winless.
Special Congratulations to the 2022 Nyack Fall Athletes of the Season Abby Mack (Swimming), and Xavier Kamba (Boy’s Soccer).
