Dribbling their way to an amazing start was the boys basketball team. They won the Howard Godwin Tournament in Sleepy Hollow on December 3rd, soundly defeating Ossining and Henry Hudson by ten-point margins with many meaningful contributions, including those from Juniors Raydelh Boutin and Gabe Walker, both selected for the all-tournament team. No contribution was more important than that of Xavier Jules, who won tournament MVP. Since then, the team is 2-0, beginning the season on a four game heater, riding high into their tilt vs Roosevelt in the Red and Black Tournament!
Despite dropping the home opener to Henry Hudson 64-41, the girls basketball team was able to turn fortunes around in their favor, ousting Roosevelt 67-36, defeating Sleepy Hollow by a slim margin, and following up with a 63-13 pummeling of Edgemont this past Friday [Dec 24]. One of the keys to the successful 3-1 start has been the consistent play of Junior Gianna Longo, who has notched 42 points in her last two consecutive contests, as well as Juniors Brooke Jordan, Aniya Celestin, and Sydney Edmonds.
Both Boys and Girls Basketball will compete in the annual Red and Black Tournament hosted in the Rejholec Gymnasium from December 28-29. Go Redhawks!
The Track and Field Program has raced into the new month, with successes ranging from school records to college commitments. While these accomplishments are never taken for granted, they certainly are not unexpected, as four athletes were put on Lohud’s watch list prior to the season opener: Seniors Matti Petricone and Putu Sutayasa, and Juniors Matthew Schutzbank and Freddie Hurson.
Congratulations to Senior Amber McDonald, who just broke the school record for the 55 meter sprint with a blazing 7.37 seconds! If this wasn't enough already, eighth grader (yes, eighth grader) Maya Gould qualified for the New Balance Indoor Nationals in the middle school division, having run an impressive 600 meter sprint at a 1:58 time. In the same event, Senior Captain and Oneonta Red Dragons commit Lucas Berg ran an impressive 1:30 time. Junior Matthew Schutzbank also contributed to victory in the 4 x 800 and ran a quick 2 mile race at 10:03.
The Redhawk runners will be making a lot of noise in Oneonta next fall as both Jesse Woodhouse and Lucas Berg have recently announced their commitments.
Nyack swimmers have created quite a splash this year with their impressive accolades! Junior Cornelia Fox is now the STATE CHAMPION having won the NYSPHSAA 100m Freestyle! She is the first Nyack swimmer to accomplish this feat since 1940.
If that wasn't exciting enough, congratulations to Senior Madison Milla, who has committed to swim at Smith College. Her leadership has helped the team blossom into a consistent competitor, and has paved the way for many younger swimmers.
The Redhawks have gone undefeated through their first two December meets, outsourcing opponents by a whopping 186-93 margin! Junior Jake Bender swam an impressive 5:17.15 in the 500 meter freestyle, and Freshman Zachary Trenczer raced to an incredible 5:11.81 time. Impressive stuff from a first-year high schooler who has already been put on the Lohud watch list!
The swing into the new year will bring new challenges and opportunities for Nyack teams who have paved a path towards greatness in the opening weeks of the winter campaign. Consistency and balance are key ingredients to producing champions, and the poise and prowess among the Redhawks has made for an exciting beginning and should make for quite the run. Stay tuned!
