Angela Chen is a U & I Mentoring Program facilitator from 2021 to 2022. She tries to improve the program based on putting her efforts into her learning method for students interested in the program. Many Mentors and Mentees in the program will follow Chen’s learning method to improve themself to get into a better English culture. She would challenge herself based on how mentees and mentors keep track of the way students learn.
How does Chen make it perfect for the U&I Mentoring Program?
This U&I Mentoring has been running since 2011 by QARI. Every year whether there is a new facilitator or not, the Mentoring will update activity for those students who join the program to have a very positive experience and growth. The program can change the policy based on the running for each year of improving English skills progressively. The following year can be better than before. For Chen, she took what happened last year's content, so all of the facilitator's material was used and took some to make it suitable for the mentoring program this year, hopefully.
What are some goals for this year in the program?
Chen set some particular goals for the U&I Mentoring program. They all focus on their mentees. She wants their mentees to feel more comfortable with their English level going up year by year and help them be confident as usual. After school, mentors must always be there with the mentees to support those needing much help. If mentees have homework to do after that, they will have an activity for drawing, which is an activity for them to show hometowns and create goals. She hopes the program activities for them to socialize and meet new people to avoid emptiness.
Is there any good field trip for students to have fun in the Mentoring Section?
The U&I Mentoring also provides many opportunities for mentors and mentees to have different kinds of field trips. Field trips are taking part in activities. For example, bowling, ice skating, and many additional field trips allow students to have reduced mental stress. School transportation could provide transportation for the program, so all field trips are accessible. Field trips are for Chen to experience things that students have not experienced before.
What does Chen want to look for in mentors' success and pathway?
Chen also wants to look for mentors' success and on their pathways. She enjoys all the mentors to learn something new and good at volunteering with these programs and wants them to gain some particular skills, such as being more patient and building personal education skills. Chen also knows working with middle schoolers is not an easy task, and leather ship skills definitely work with young students, or even just becoming more Social. In the future, she hopes that mentors take some spirits when they are in college or even once they have beneficial jobs.
What does Chen want to look for in Mentees' success and pathway?
Even new immigrants who are new to the school environment, their grades are concerned about many subjects. Chen also wants to look for mentees to work on additional problems and speak more with their classmates using English only. She created more learning models such as worksheets and some research to hopefully improve. She did everything she hoped mentees would be mentored themselves and teach many new immigrants to help them gain knowledge and adapt to the new school environment. It is the key to passing down beneficial expertise to younger generations.
What are the weaknesses of the Mentoring section?
There are some weaknesses for the U&I Mentoring to achieve in a much better program. Chen has to face something that can not commodify all middle school students. Some mentees have been to multiple years to join the program. The result of the program is not as engaging enough as helpful for mentees to have a better environment to be much more successful in the English language. Some mentees have different English levels and caused difficulty in applying the same policies and activities.
