Charlie Affleck - A Leader and a Friend
By Liam Crampton
Many people would have different definitions of a model student, but North Quincy High School Senior, Charlie Affleck would find himself under every single one. The academic standout and ROTC Squadron Commander has made quite the name for himself during his run as a High School Student. He’s extremely well liked amongst his peers, so much so he even got voted in as a Homecoming King candidate.
Going into High School, Affleck wasn’t entirely sure what to choose as an elective. After looking over his options, he ended up choosing the ROTC program, due to an interest in aerospace science.
Throughout his four year tenure as an ROTC member, Affleck has found himself rising all the way to Squadron Commander and is involved with many different activities within the program. One of those programs is Kitty Hawk, a National Honors Society for members of ROTC that revolves around tutoring students. Affleck’s hard work has earned himself the position of Kitty Hawk’s president and is in charge of many things, including this year’s annual induction ceremony for new members.
Affleck is also the Captain of North Quincy High School’s StellarXplorers team, a team-building competition in which students solve scenarios given by the AFA, based around STEM and Space. Affleck has been involved in StellarXplorers since his sophomore year and is looking forward to it’s return this October, in which his leadership and ability as a now captain can help the team move forward in their upcoming competitions.
Community Service plays a big role in Affleck’s life as a high schooler. ROTC provides many opportunities for community service and there aren't many you’ll see Affleck turn down.
“I’d bet it’s close to 50 events.” is what Affleck answered when asked how many community service opportunities ROTC provides every school year.
From beach clean ups to fundraisers, there are no limits to what you’ll see Affleck participate in to help the community. Most recently, he participated in a Color Guard event in which they marched with flags in uniform. The over 100 Community Service hours Affleck has racked up shows how much he cares about the community.
ROTC is not where Affleck stops. He is a long time member of a FIRST Robotics team in which he specializes in electrical work and participates in competitions. He’s also a member of the Green Student Movement, an after school club that focuses on helping the environment. They participate in many clean-up events around the city. You can also find Affleck in Downtown Boston, working part-time at Jaho Coffee Roaster & Wine Bar as a barista, where he’s quickly become a fan favorite.
Affleck is admired by not just his activeness in the community and his hard work, but his character. Amongst his peers, Affleck is known as a kind, funny, quick witted, and caring friend who brightens every room he is in.
"Charlie Affleck is someone who I only hold respect for. He is smart and an overall humorous person but what I respect more than that is simply his honesty to himself and his kindness", answered Xing Hao Huang, classmate and longtime friend of Affleck’s.
Affleck is not just a fantastic student and an active community member, but an ideal friend whose presence brings life to all around.
