Jack Cavicchi has been a crucial part of the North Quincy High School Boys Soccer team since he was a freshman. After being a standout player on JV during his first season, he earned his spot as the starting goalkeeper during his sophomore campaign. Now coming up on his final season, I sat down to ask him about the team dynamic and its promising future ahead.
How do you think the North Quincy High School Boys Soccer Team will react to the loss of several key senior players next season?
Although it’ll be a tough adjustment, it happens every season. It’s all about how we react and rise to the challenge. Rather than dwelling on the past, it’s important for us to focus on the future and the talent we have going forward.
With the loss of players comes a need for new leadership. How do you envision this working out? Who do you think will step up to the challenge?
It’s all about who wants to practice and work towards improving their skill set every day. Regardless, most of our defense, including our two center backs and goalie, are coming back next year for their senior season. With a core group at the back, we see the field from a different angle, which allows us to give direction to younger players when needed.
With that being said, there are many players in the starting lineup that will be back to resume their role next season. How do you think this will benefit the team as a whole?
The key to a successful team is trust. The more you play with people, the better bonds you create, allowing you to become comfortable with your teammates both on and off the ball. Playing with the same people for over two years definitely helps to improve our team chemistry, which will help to set us up for success in the long run.
How do you think players on JV last season will react to the opportunity of being on varsity in the upcoming year?
I think this will push them to work even harder than before. They have to realize that there’s a spot available, and it’s there for the taking if they want it. I also think they will rely on each other for motivation, which proves that all anyone wants is to see their teammates succeed.
Charlie Kilman has been coaching soccer for many years. How do you think this experience will help the team in the future?
Coach Kilman has coached a diverse range of players, all of which have helped him develop an incredible knowledge of the game. The main challenge is figuring out how to apply this to the specific group of 20 players we have on the team. Taking the different experiences he’s gone through and using it to better each individual player is something he has mastered, which only helps to benefit our team in the future. I have all the confidence in the world in him.
North Quincy Boys Soccer is not only a team, but a tight knit group of friends. Do you think this directly correlates to success on the field?
Being close with your teammates, instead of only seeing them at practice, definitely helps build trust. We also all respect each other, something that sets us apart from other teams. Knowing that you could give feedback to someone about a play and they wouldn't be angry is crucial because communication is how you learn from your mistakes.
What is a positive take away you had from last season?
I think that the role the underclassmen played in leading the team really helped to bring us together. Because our defense was primarily made up of juniors, they were forced to control the game on a whole a new level, something most of them weren’t used to. However, despite their inexperience, they could not have done a better job. Going into next season, this leadership will help us win games, which is all we could ever ask for.
What would you say is one thing you have to work on from last year and how do you plan on doing so?
I definitely think that we have to score more goals. Players need to step up on the attack and become more skilled. This will allow our defense to rest after controlling the ball for an extended period of time. Also, we need to do better moving off of the ball. This will ultimately allow for more scoring opportunities.
What does the incoming freshmen class look like? Are there any players in particular that you believe will have a positive impact on the team?
My brother, Mikey, will be a freshman next year, so he and some of his friends will be good additions to the team for the years to come. Other than that, hopefully we get some guys that are willing to work hard and have fun.
What predictions do you have for next season? Will you beat Quincy?
I think next season our record will be around 0.500, a major improvement from years prior. As for Quincy, we’re wiping the floor with them.
