QUINCY - As Michael Scott, from The Office, once said, “Pizza. Great equalizer. Rich people love pizza. Poor people love pizza. White people love pizza. Black people love pizza. Do black people like pizza?” Everyone loves pizza is the point, but which pizza is the best? Quincy has many pizza places and this review does not encompass them all but it’s a good start when deciding where to get your next pie.
David’s Pizza (BBQ Pizza):
Presentation: 4/5 The pizza in appearance looked perfectly appetizing. The slices were not perfectly even but they were close enough to the point where it didn’t make much of a difference. The pizza wasn’t the prettiest but overall it looked very delicious and the evenness of the slices helped to boost it up even higher.
Ingredients: 5/5 Not only does David’s pizza offer an abundance of ingredients on their pizza but they are also well spread out. Each slice has a roughly equivalent amount of ingredients but they still don’t look purposefully placed, as it should be on a good pizza. They should be well spread out, but random enough to give each slice a little bit of variety.
Quality of ingredients: 5/5 The chicken was cooked just right, not overdone but not underdone either. The seasoning added to the chicken also added a lot of flavor, but not the kind that would distract from the other flavors. The other ingredients were all of very good quality as well.
Sauce: 4/5 The pizza had a BBQ sauce base, (the best way to do pizza), and the the sauce was good. It didn’t fall into any of the extremes some sauces do, and was very good. The only real complaint was the amount. I think, with just a little more sauce, this would have been a 5/5 but that is not so. The sauce should be present in every bite but not overpowering, there are many cases here where the sauce was not truly detectable.
Crust: 3/5 The best way to describe the crust of this pizza is perfectly fine. It supported its own weight well enough, it didn’t bend over completely but each slice did sag at the tip a bit. The crust didn’t have any notable flavor. Pretty standard overall.
Overall: 4.2. Overall a high quality and exciting pizza. It has a little bit of everything for people to enjoy and no one element is overbearing compared to the others. A near perfect pizza, every element is either done well or done exceptionally well and any points lost were for relatively minor issues.
Sofia’s Pizza (BBQ Pizza):
Presentation: 4/5. Sofia’s pizza looked beautiful. The sauce served as a light base for the pizza but was also laid on over it in a sort of hatch pattern, like one may see in a work of art. Full points were not given however because the slices were not very even. It wasn’t horribly uneven, but it wasn’t even enough for a 5/5.
Ingredients: 3/5. There was not a great variety of ingredients on the pizza, but there was enough to be sufficient. The ingredients were not very well spread either. Some bites of pizza were just sauce and cheese, when really every bit should have at least something extra.
Quality of Ingredients: 3/5. No ingredient tasted bad but no ingredient was exceptional either. Their sizes and shapes were good but there isn’t much more to say about them than that.
Sauce: 4/5. The sauce tasted good and the ratio was very good as well. Every bit had a little bit of sauce to add to the flavor, but it wasn’t always a very consistent amount. No bite had too much sauce to be overbearing and with a more consistent experience throughout this score would have been perfect.
Crust: 3/5. The crust supported the pizza’s weight well, but overall the crust was rather bland. It added no flavor to the pizza and at the end of the slice it was fed to my dog, instead of being eaten by me, due to this blandness. It certainly didn’t ruin the pizza itself but it didn’t add anything to it either.
Overall: 3.4. The pizza was good, I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. It was a very serviceable pizza and fairly straightforward. If you like simple pizzas this may work for you, but some added complexity would have helped the pizza in my opinion.
Montilio's Pizza (BBQ Pizza):
Presentation: 3/5. There isn’t much to say about the pizza, it looked like a normal pizza and didn’t have much special about it. It had a similar pattern to Sofia’s pizza for the sauce but not done nearly as well. Of all the pizzas however, these slices were the most even.
Ingredients: 3/5. A very standard amount of ingredients. The spread of ingredients was enough that every slice had some of something, but even then the spread of ingredients wasn’t exceptionally balanced.
Quality of Ingredients: 3/5. The ingredients all tasted fine. The chicken was a little bland. None of the ingredients tasted bad but none were great.
Sauce: 3/5. The sauce was fine, but still probably my least favorite among the pizzas. There was a mix of tomato sauce and BBQ sauce, which isn’t the best way to make a BBQ pizza in my opinion, but it wasn’t terrible. The BBQ sauce definitely came through stronger as there seemed to be minimal tomato sauce so for the most part it was unnoticeable.
Crust: 3/5. The crust tasted well enough and was less bland than Sofia’s pizza, but it had difficulty supporting the weight of the slice. This is surprising, considering the low amount of ingredients but a considerable amount of effort had to be placed in keeping the slice level and preventing the ingredients from spilling off.
Overall: 3. A perfectly average pizza. It won’t ruin your night to order it but also why not just get better pizza, from somewhere else?
I Love Italian Pizza (Classic BBQ):
Presentation: 4/5. The pizza looked delicious, but the slices were uneven, more uneven than any of the other pizzas. Despite this unevenness it was just a nice looking pizza and looked very appetizing, especially compared to some of the other pizzas.
Ingredients: 4/5. This pizza had a good variety of ingredients all in good quantity. It’s ingredients were mostly spread evenly but there definitely were some slices which had been more generously supplied than others.
Quality of Ingredients: 5/5. Each ingredient was of good quality, the chicken didn’t taste overly dry or bland or anything like that. The ingredients were well cut and sized and no one ingredient was overpowering, but each had its own distinct taste and added something to the pizza.
Sauce: 4/5. The sauce was probably the best tasting sauce of all the pizzas and the most consistently spread, that being said, there were times where the sauce was a little overbearing and may have masked the flavors of other ingredients. Personally some may prefer the extra amount of sauce but for most people it seems it may come on a little too strong.
Crust: 4/5. Out of all the crusts this one was my favorite. It supported the weight of the slice very well and it tasted good. Its flavor didn’t take over the whole pizza and it was right balance of thin to thick and of crispiness to softness. More flavor could be added to the crust, especially once you get to the end of the pizza but overall a great crust.
Overall: 4.2. Probably my favorite pizza of the bunch. It has a lot of flavor and a lot to like. Other pizzas, like David’s pizza may be better for a more general situation, as it casts a wider net, but for more specific tastes this is the pizza to go with.
Domino’s
Presentation: 3/5. The pizza looked good, but the style of crust made it look different from any of the other pizzas. The slices were all a variety of sizes, making it difficult to have any really fair portion for just one person.
Ingredients: 3/5. The pizza did not have a great variety of different ingredients, and what was there was spread evenly enough throughout the pizza, but there were some slices that seemed to be lacking a few ingredients.
Quality of Ingredients: 3/5. Everything tasted fine but no ingredient was particularly impressive in terms of quality. There was no ingredient that I did not enjoy eating, however.
Sauce: 4/5 The sauce was very flavorful but there were some slices that could have used more of it. Compared to the other sauces it was probably the most unique in flavor, but not necessarily the best.
Crust: 4/5 The crust was certainly the most flavorful of any of the pizzas. It was rather thin which meant it was unable to support its own weight well, but that’s the trade-off of the style. Because of the crust’s nature it was cut in a way that most slices didn’t have crust on its own at the end of a slice. For some this may be good, for others this may not be ideal, but it is worth noting either way.
Overall: 3.4. Domino’s pizza was certainly good but it wasn’t incredible. Their online ordering allows for a lot of customization, however, so if you’re looking for a decent pizza and have some specific tastes, Domino’s may just be the place.
In conclusion, David’s Pizza and I Love Italian Pizza tied with their scores. In terms of quality they are both the equal pizza, so really which is best comes down to some personal preferences. If you like a more generalist style of pizza then David’s Pizza may be the choice for you, but if your tastes are more specific maybe try I Love Italian. As far as my own preference, I love Italian comes out ahead by just a hair.
