The player characters of Nocturne Symphony.
A man with sharp teeth and a sharper tongue, Klaus Graves is a case study of someone dropped into the Symphony too young, shedding his humanity for the Gears - nihilistic, cruel, manipulative, and self-serving above all else. Despite his disdain for the Midnight Cabal, he has yet to leave the Agency - perhaps staying in arm's reach of the few genuine connections he's made. While he waits for the inevitable curtain call, he builds a home for himself as an independent contractor and gadgeteer in the Chicago Symphony. Truthfully, he'd love nothing more than to pursue his projects in peace, but there's little of that to spare for the wicked.
The widow sits in the center of her web, casting her threads around her host as a spider would cocoon its prey. Equal parts elegant and narcissistic, Hybris is no more human than the shears of Damocles, even after Falling from grace. As all Wheels obsess over their proejcts, there's no doubt that she considers Klaus hers. She takes care of him as a collector looks after her toys, but her whispered words offer insidious poisons as often as they give warnings and advice. She never speaks of what she keeps him for, only that his return to her is inevitable. For now, she lives in the shadowed corners of his mirrors, patient and ever present.
Once a man defined by his ties to old money, prestige, and high society, Elliot Deveraux has long since shed that aspect of himself throughout the course of three arduous years in the Symphony. He continues to operate as a corporate lawyer even though frequent supernatural forays and a crippling dependence on his demonic abilities to uphold self-imposed impossible standards constantly erode at his remaining ties to mundane society.
At his core, Elliot remains a juxtaposition of acerbic commentary and subtle machinations. His pursuit of knowledge and desire for connections to stay afloat in this world of darkness are only mirrored by a drive to safeguard the little that he can call his own in the infinitesimal space between humanity and the Symphony – often by any means at his disposal, detrimental or not.
Originally known to many as James – and to Elliot privately as Elias – it is unknown as to why Mx. Rook has decided to change their name and demeanor months ago. Regardless of their reasons, their character is slippery like oil at best – ever-changing and malleable to the situation, though they are more than content to watch Elliot get himself into and out of various situations instead of piloting for the partnership.
However, the moments where Rook has taken over generally have highlighted their fondness for chaos and discord, and emphasized their utter disregard for the consequences that follow: something that's both lingered from their Chained lifestyle as Eris and spelled awful consequences for both host and demon. The combination could be considered the primary reason for this partnership’s refusal to understand each other more thoroughly.
With each blood splatter and fingerprint under their microscope, Desi finds another thrilling story that would add to their podcast. Energetic and easy-going, the forensic scientist does not hold back in cracking jokes around others and aspires to live as the spotlight in a never-ending party. Fearing of losing what they painstakingly accumulated in life, they justify placing their selfish needs first. Troubles and vulnerability are best protected when hidden away from others. They rather fill their world with joy, and joy only.
A demon as selfish as the human they had handpicked for a pact. For years, Seve whispered into human ears, repetitively pulling the strings between individuals for making perfect cultists. Seeing no end and no purpose to their labor, they sought for their deserved rest through the Fall. They long for an undisturbed rest, residing inside whom they believe to have the mindset to place themself before all. The demon rarely directs Desi’s actions as long as their slumber remains disturbed, unless the safety of their vessel is threatened.
Paranoid to a fault, Tera seems to share many traits with their demon- skittish and not likely to branch out to those around them, even if they needed help; the need to run and hide drilled into them from a rocky youth. Overall though, they’re an odd but helpful person; having made their pact originally just to find a place to let them stop running and to be able to call home. They seem to have found that, at least to some extent.
Far more akin to the creature that the name of which it goes by, Possum is… an interesting one. It doesn’t talk much, preferring gestures and much more animalistic vocalizations instead. As well, it tends to hide away without the temptations of food or in the face of danger. It could’ve fallen for any number of reasons, but perhaps it’s paranoia and tendency to overreact to situations gives some hints as to why.
Vivian Kingsley is what some could call a beacon of light in what is otherwise a world of darkness - kind, cheerful, friendly and loving. What she lacks in fighting prowess, she compensates with a good-humored empathetic disposition always willing to help, and talented hands ready to sew a resilient outfit to protect her fellow Cabal members whom she has grown to call her family. All that goodness is not without mischief, as her friends would know very well; the self-proclaimed 'catgirl' is not above playful jabs directed at those she likes, or using her spy-oriented spells to play harmless pranks on them. Her love for all animals and supernatural creatures can only be outdone by her love for people, even though she knows that amongst them hide the worst kind of monsters; the kind that, until recently, caused her to hide all the pain behind a forced smile.
Once upon a time a high-ranking and seasoned Guardian Angel, the entity going by the name of Grimsmyle (Grimm, for short) is now, by his own admission, a "full-time demon dad". While presenting himself as a laidback, confident and snarky demon, Grimm still lives up to his past incarnation in a way - vowing to protect Vivian, his charge, and ensure her happiness. His closeness with his host may be seen as unusual to some, but in it lies perhaps this duo's biggest strength, as the young pactholder is never lacking support and advice. Underneath the bravado, however, and the swearing and the thirst for violence to keep him entertained, hides longing and regret. Longing for a life he can never have. Regret over past failures - failures that could very well come back to haunt him, and his beloved 'daughter'. And he is very aware of it.
Lucien King is the story of weapon discovering what it's like to live. Escaping death, King has ruthlessly snatched his life to direct its course. Stoic, assertive, pragmatic, and struggling to understand his emotions, King is a sharp-minded and decisive force that hits like a typhoon. Yet, hands that kill can also heal and write - and he now teeters between concepts of human nature that were once foreign. As a contractor combat field medic, King finds his talents are highly valuable in a world filled with things trying to kill. As he flips the pages of his own story and prepares to write the next chapter, he privately hopes there's a home waiting in the epilogue.
Diener ♢ Angel of Death
Demon ♢ Psychopomp ♢ Tempter ♢ Neutral GoodSweet, elegant, miss collector of souls. Diener is modeled after a crumbling angelic statue in the gardens of an old hospital. Having once roamed hospitals to recycle the souls of the dying, Diener fell prey to a curiosity for life. Having claimed her host's soul as her new home, Diener wishes to see the world through another's eyes. Nosy, genuine, and a bit naive, Diener is thirsty for adventure and new experiences; finding herself wanting to learn to live alongside someone who has been kept so far from the light. Diener believes the world is so full of surprises just waiting to be discovered, so full of humans with unique stories and adventures to unravel.
Catastrophe sticks to Seif Al-Qamar like a bad smell, and if you hang around him long enough you’ll start to stink like it too. A known pragmatist with a natural commanding presence, and armed to the teeth with deadly wires, a brilliant mind, and serrated wit; He’ll tell you he’s nothing more fantastic than an entomology professor at UChicago, despite all the evidence leading keen eyes to suspect otherwise. As a former detective and auxiliary member of the Red Fang, he refuses to let the tragedies that cling to him rob him of his trademark empathy and strict moral compass, and hopes to find self forgiveness in his Descent.
Ms. Spinner ♢ Satine ♢ Melpomene
Demon ♢ Destroyer ♢ Inquisitor ♢ Lawful EvilThe Muse of Tragedy, Melpomene, the former Sword of the Mousai, Ms. Spinner, Satine: All appropriate names to refer to the Unchained behind the Moth to the Flame. Satine is a dark foil of one that Seif has never met — foxy, narcissistic, stately and unsympathetic. An Inquisitor with grand plans, of which she has left her host in the dark about for as long as they’ve known each other. It is hard to say why exactly she chose this path, and her unhelpful answers and negative influence on Seif’s thoughts irritates him to no end; His frustration and contentious attitude towards Satine’s guidance has contributed to a case of severely stagnating Resonance.

Once a man living in the world of fame and luxury, Kyousuke’s need to constantly find ways to entertain himself led to his ruin. Upon learning of the Symphony, Kyousuke’s curiosity led him to begin to turn his back on his mundane life more and more- to the point that even his own demon comments that he seems rather less human than most, from time to time.
A man who has no issue or second thoughts about manipulating those around him for his own whims, Kyousuke is constantly striving to push the boundaries of just what chaos he can bring to the table, usually for his own amusement or purpose rather than for the good of others.
Sen ♢ Black Fox
Demon ♢ Destroyer ♢ Integrator ♢ Lawful EvilOnce an angel that appeared only to punish and remove those that acted outside of their place or code in Fudal Japan. Eventually, after centuries, Sen started to find that there was a small, but growing cruel… enjoyment, for cutting down others, especially those that she personally deemed unfit to exist, leading to her fall.
Sen has a very…. Rocky relationship with her host; having made her pact out of desperation and the want to survive, she sees Kyousuke as a dangerous creature who could eventually wreck havoc if he so wished. Despite that, she chooses to not interact as much as possible; only commenting on choices that threaten her survival more than anything. For the time being, she has, at least mostly, come to an understanding with her host.
A mechanic from the Philippines with a heart hidden behind a deadpan stare, she’s also a fighter who’s proven a force to be reckoned with on the field, armed with nothing but her fists and knowledge of martial arts. Desperate to save her father from dying, she made a pact with a demon in exchange for her father to live, but caused someone just as precious to die in his place. How does one cope when your wish causes the death of a loved one? Kira’s still looking for the answer to that, three years later.
Despite the constant ebb and flow between the mindset that she should live for repentance or she should live for herself, she is still here, and the Symphony waits for no one. So she must forge ahead, even if she will never find peace or closure for her guilt.
Manisilat ♢ Mani
Demon ♢ Destroyer ♢ Saboteur ♢ Chaotic NeutralEver since the 16th century, Manisilat's mission as an angel was to hunt down a specific target when they evaded other Destroyers on the field, and when her mission was done, she would be recycled and start anew with a new target. For centuries, this went on, until recently she had begun to feel something outside of the apathy she usually felt.
Enjoyment.
It started out small, but soon it was a glitch in her code that she enjoyed the hunt- playing with her prey rather than end it quickly and efficiently as possible. She loved obstacles that weren't even a part of her mission, and she fell.
No one outside of the Cabal has really seen Mani interact other than in a childish or playful way in the rare times she's in control, but she's content...for now.
A mortician by trade, Maggie is, considered by most, strange in general. A love for the odd and the strange borne from their families own love for the supernatural and death, Maggie has spent the three years since becoming a pactholder finding something of a place for themselves within the Paris Symphony- often undertaking various contract work here and there and offering their mortuary after hours as a place to come to those in the symphony who may need their services, Maggie also understands that it’s better to keep a low presence in order to survive.
Despite this, Maggie is an independent spirit- one that will speak their mind on issues, although often expecting possible conflict due to personal experiences when they do so, Maggie refuses to let this stop them from being who they are as much as they can.
Poe ♢ Raven ♢ Domina Mortis
Demon ♢ Messenger ♢ Inquisitor ♢ True NeutralHaving been created as a tool during the black death in Paris, and then remade to feed the gears in a now abandoned hospital, Poe at first thought nothing of those that she would take; the old and the dying, the people no-one would miss. Over time, though, the angel noticed those that weeped as they were given to the gears, the way that those that did have others how they mourned each other. Becoming disinterested in her position, she turned to comforting those that were to pass- eventually falling for abandoning her post and the hospital.
Poe is a rather relaxed demon in all- finding it comfortable to discuss symphonic based information, she considers her place within her host as a nest for her to live inside; at least until the eventual inevitably that death finds everyone.
A scientist by nature and profession, Lionel McGee has always found more solace in the comfort of his laboratory than other people. Fascinated by the world around him, Lionel delights in learning how everything works; and then twisting and reshaping it to suit his own machinations. His intense fixations coupled with his anal personality have made him something of outcast in the mundane world, avoided and judged as a rule. With the Symphony full of endless new curiosities, Lionel has stepped into its song as an eager participant, growing more comfortable by the day with shedding his attachment to being a regular human.
Stolas ♢ Coeus ♢ Mephistopheles
Demon ♢ Analyst ♢ Tempter-Inquisitor ♢ Chaotic EvilCollector and keeper of knowledge forgotten by man, Stolas is a demon who has existed in the fringes of the Symphonic world for longer than Jesus. Having Fell for his love of humanity, Stolas predictably has entrenched himself with them, having made more Pacts than he has created Covers. Lionel is not his first pact, nor will he be his last. While outwardly sociable and extroverted, he’s lived a long, full life and has collected an incalculable number of secrets over it — of which he guards closely. What his motivations are in this era are nebulous at best, a mystery he’s content to keep to himself for now.
A seeker of knowledge and power, both in the mundane and Symphonic worlds, with the marks of grief and vengeance clinging to his shadow. The last surviving member of a Northwestern old money family, Damian is a man who can be described as a gloomy, decadent scholar, who tends to prefer the company of his books in the solitude of his Seattle estate. However, he is also a witty businessman with a silver tongue, a skilled combatant with a sword and, surprisingly, possesses a kind heart underneath his cloak. His unending desire to learn as much as he can of the occult arts drives him to Symphonic ventures, partly because of his hunger for knowledge and partly to ensure he has what is needed to preserve himself and those he cares about.
Tyrannus ♢ Rot ♢ Ty
Demon ♢ Destroyer ♢ Saboteur-Tempter ♢ Chaotic EvilA highly accomplished Sword in his time, Tyrannus brought kingdoms to their knees during the central Europe of the Middle Ages as according to the will of the God Machine, slaying whoever was laid before him, without introspection or complaint. Now, capricious and ruthless yet observant and distrustful to outsiders, he mostly remains in the shadows, yet alert to those who oppose him and his host. A rather laid back and snarky Tempter, combined with the desire for chaotic entertainment of a Saboteur with experience in the field. He sees those around him as chess pieces and assets, not understanding the concept of selfless actions and scoffing at some of the Duke’s judgements. Still, he respects his host, and would be lying if he said the man’s desire for knowledge did not amuse him.
