The Ostrich (South African ornithological journal) Oktober 1956--excerpt from Leonard Gill's obituary: "in the time before Leonard's directorship of the South African Museum no colour handbooks which could enable easy identification of our birds were available. Many a newcomer to the country, fascinated by the interesting bird life, made use of Gill's expert help which was always given so willingly. His deep love of our wild birds was certainly not concealed and it was always delightful to hear him describe a bird-outing he and his sister had undertaken. Of his many publications, both popular and scientific, his introductory book A First Guide To South African Birds, illustrated so ably by his sister Marian Gill, is certainly the most widely known."
