Notes on the above subjects: Henry Standing's great uncle John Cheal cared for Henry's father George for a time after George's mother passed away. It is likely that George Standing had a photo of John Cheal in his possession. Henry Standing's great grandfather was also named John Cheal, the father of George's deceased mother.
On this side of the Atlantic we are not too familiar with William Gladstone. Henry's charcoal drawing of Gladstone was a stray piece of paper in the drawer of the writing desk Theodora "Tao" Woolfe inherited; she asked us to help her identify the subject. (Her desk is possibly THE writing desk which Mr. Harniman had given George when G. was an apprentice on the Isle of Wight). Paul Murphy, a relative in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, whose common ancestors were John and Lucy Cheal, wrote to say that W.E. Gladstone was a Liberal member of Parliament and that "the politics of Liberalism were attractive to Quakers in 19th Century England--in fact I cannot think of a single Quaker member of Parliament who was not a Liberal." Gladstone also served as Prime Minister from 1868-74; 1880-85; 1886; and finally 1892-94.
