Photo ~ 1890. Sarah was the oldest of 9 children. Her formal art school training included classes taken in both England and Ireland. Later she taught drawing in private schools in London and Belfast. In 1887 the family emigrated to the United States where they settled in Rochester, New York. There Sarah worked at Sibley, Lindsay and Curr, a large department store where she did custom watercolors for clients. Her family have in their possession many of the paintings and drawings she did in art school, a collection of watercolors she did both in England and the United States and a sample of the kind of work she did in her job in Rochester.
Sarah was one of three Nicholson sisters of Rochester, New York who married three Standing brothers of Earlham, Iowa. Sarah and George Edwin Standing lived on a farm two miles north of Earlham and one mile east of the Bear Creek Meeting House. Great niece Wanda Knight has a water color of the barn on the George and Sarah Standing farm.
