References: Common Illegal Items, Evidence Collection and Processing
This procedure outlines how to properly process and log evidence after an arrest.
Once you have arrested a suspect, ensure that all illegal items are removed from their person.
After sending the suspect to prison and completing your report, it's crucial to ensure that all seized items and evidence are appropriately logged.
For processing these types of evidence (fingerprints, bullet casings, and blood samples), follow the specific procedures detailed here.
For weapons, drugs, and items collected from the crime scene (e.g., jewelry, money bands), follow these steps:
Locate the incident number at the top of the report (e.g., ID #1234).
In the evidence room, open a new evidence locker designated for that specific incident.
Name the evidence locker using the incident number (e.g., Evidence stash > 1234).
Ensure that all evidence related to the arrest is placed in the corresponding evidence locker.
Evidence lockers linked to a report should have two leading zeros (e.g., Evidence stash > 0090).
Mass evidence lockers should never be used for anything other than disposing of irrelevant items. Placing evidence in a mass locker and not in a dedicated locker associated with an incident is considered a violation and may lead to disciplinary actions.
Properly processing and logging evidence is essential for maintaining the integrity of cases. Following these steps ensures that all evidence related to an arrest is correctly organized and can be easily accessed for investigations and legal proceedings.
This procedure provides a clear and easy-to-follow guide for law enforcement officers to process and log evidence professionally and in accordance with departmental guidelines.
