Creating a Brand

What is your Brand for?

For this project, you are creating a brand that serves 3 purposes:

A. It can be a personal brand - Like creating a signature that will mark all of your projects

B. It can serve as the name for a design company or design firm

C. It can work as the name of a product of a company that creates a product

When you choose a name it has to be fairly original, meaning if you a search in google that specific name that you came up with cannot be in the first page of the search. If you find original names, put a circle around them


How to choose a Name?

Most brand names fit into one of 7 categories. The name is tied to the idea, feeling, or perception you want to create about your brands. Consider the following options when looking for a name. 

1. Eponymous - Using a real person's name or last name like "Sarabia" or "Disney"

2. Descriptive - They tell what the company does like "The Home Depot"

3. Acronyms - Using abbreviated letters, like "KFC" or "BMW"

4. Suggestive - Using real, composite or invented words that say something about the company like "Uber"

5. Associative - Using real words or concepts that have connotations, like "Amazon"

6. Non-English - A word in another language that means something cool

7. Abstract - completely made up, sounds interesting, no meaning

How to choose a font?

Most logos focus on a single fonts (and sometimes a secondary font) in order to present itself. When thinking about a font consider the following. 

Fonts have personalities. Serif fonts seem formal but also traditional and old school. Sans-serfi fonts are more modern but might also seem too clean and clinical. Stylized fonts can be fun they can also be complicated and seem unprofessional. Your job to find the right font that fits the personality of your font. 

What are the elements of a great logo?

Try to use basic shapes, icons or silhouettes. Think of the adidas, youtube or x-box logo.

2. Keep it Bold

Try to thick shapes that are filled in. Think of the apple, nike or twitter Logo. Bold means having no thin lines.

3. Make it Clever

To add complexity, use two or more ideas or images and try to combine them in to 1. Use the negative space in your logo to make it clever. See how  the logos below use negative space

4. Make it Scalable

Make sure your logo looks good no matter what size you make it.

Don't make your logo too complex

Start with a black and white version of your logo.
