Throwing & Catching Unit
In prep we focus on the underarm throw. The image below gives you an example of the words we focus on in class if you wish to give it a go at home too.
Undearm Throw cues we have discussed if practicing at home (year 1):
Face your target
Arm looks like a lower case “l”
Swing, Step, Throw (always stepping with opposite foot)
Cues we have discussed if practicing at home:
Reach – hands out toward the ball
Grab – grab the ball
Give – bring it into your body
Skipping
Why skip with a rope?
It improves cardiovascular fitness
It improves coordination
It improves motor skills
It increases speed
It increases bone density - helping our bones become stronger
It's FUN!
For some this is the first time the student has picked up a skipping rope, others have been doing it for quite a while. These sessions give students that haven't an opportunity to learn and practice the skill and others are challenged further.
The students are encouraged to hold the skipping rope on either side of their hips and bring the rope over their body like a big rainbow. Not to start the rope behind their head like some instinctively want to. The rainbow action makes for a wider rope action and more likely for them to successfully jump the rope.
This video here gives a great example of the types of skills we will practice in class with and without the rope.
I encourage if you can, to purchase a rope for home and have the students practise their skill regularly.
