In the Junior years we focus on the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). These are the foundation movements that contribute to the development of more specialised/complex skills that we use in games, sports and fitness and recreational activities. We focus on these skills in the beginning so that students develop the confidence and competence in these skills so they can independently engage in a variety of activities as they develop.
Most skills used in sports and movement activities are advanced versions of fundamental motor skills. For example throwing in softball and cricket, shoulder pass in netball, shot put throw, volleyball and tennis serve are all examples of the advanced forms of the overhand throw.
Walk, Run, Horizontal Jump, Vertical Jump, Leap, Hop, Dodge, Skip, Gallop/Slide (Locomotor Skills)
Overarm Throw, Underarm Roll/Throw, Catch, Kick, Punt, Bounce Strike (forehand/two-handed) (Object control Skills)
The students are not expected to master these until various ages and therefore will be focusing on these in various ways over the next few years.
