In Grade 5 & 6 PE becomes focused around sport specific skills and rules of specific sports in preparation for Gala Days. The program is also aimed to have fun, try new sports or games they may not usually be exposed to, leadership opportunities, administrative opportunities (umpire, coach for the day) and increase overall fitness. I want the students to leave school equipped with the necessary tools to continue a love of physical activity and learning new things.
The program traditionally follows a 'Teaching Games of Understanding' approach and therefore follows 4 categories of games throughout the terms. Net/Wall Games; for example volleyball, tennis and badminton; Invasion Games; netball, AFL and soccer; Target Games; eg. bowling and golf and Striking Games; eg. cricket and softball. These games will change each year to add variety to the program but some will remain the same as they are traditional interschool sport games.
In Grade 6, I am keen to develop the students leadership skills and will throw in opportunities to learn all aspects of a sport - umpiring, coaching, teaching, etc
