Create a compelling photograph by staging a miniature scene using small toys and photographing it with a large aperture to achieve a shallow depth of field.
Select Your Toys
Choose 2–5 small toys or figurines. Think about how these characters could interact to tell a story.
Create Your Scene
Set up a background (fabric, paper, or any environment you can build).
Arrange the toys in a way that shows action, emotion, or interaction.
Pay attention to composition and lighting.
Camera Settings
Use the largest aperture your lens allows (e.g., f/1.8–f/4).
Focus on one toy or a key part of your scene to create a shallow depth of field (blurry background).
Take multiple shots from different angles and distances.
Experiment
Try different perspectives: get low to the ground, shoot from above, or frame through objects.
Adjust the lighting for mood (window light, flashlight, or a desk lamp).
Editing
Edit your best photo to enhance brightness, contrast, and colors.
Crop carefully to improve composition if needed.
Submit 3 final images:(Take a minimum of 20 images)
1 close-up focusing on one toy with strong background blur.
1 wider scene showing all toys in context.
1 creative angle of your choice.
A contact sheet with all of your imagesÂ
Add your images to your portfolio website with a reflection statement that includes:
What story are you telling?
Why did you choose this composition?
Did you struggle with any parts of this assignment?Â
What did you discover about aperture?Â
Use a tripod or stable surface to avoid blur.
Make sure your main subject is sharply in focus.
Keep backgrounds simple so the toys stand out.
Think creatively—make the toys look larger-than-life!
