HelpX: Getting Started with InDesign
Before you can really get started using Adobe InDesign, you need to understand the program interface itself. Start by watching the Get to Know InDesign HelpX videos linked to the right and answer the questions on the worksheet provided. Follow along with the videos while you answer the questions. Make sure you are paying attention because this has some really great information to help you get started!
Save your worksheet as Last Name + First Name + Period + Get to know ID and turn in here.

ID Tools and Workspace
Knowing how the program is laid out and what the tools are help you work more efficiently in the program. After reviewing the InDesign Basics Presentation, you will then complete the worksheets found to the below. These are PDF worksheets and to fill in your answers and save those answer, you must use a PDF Reader program.
Save your worksheets as Last Name +First Name + Period + ID Tools and Workspace

For the next 3 assignments, create a folder to save all your files in. This is what you will turn in. When you have finished, you will label the folder as LastName + FirstName + Period + Intro to InDesign and turn it in both when you are finished.
Document Setup
Read How to setup a document. You will use this guide to help you create a new document. Follow the guides exact directions to achieve a document that looks like Figure 11.
Envelopes
Read How to Use Grids and Guides to add guides for you to use on the envelop. Add a grid for the address, stamp, and return address. Make sure you are using proper alignment. Then add text boxes for the address and return address. Make up any address to fill the boxes. Chose a new font and adjust the spacing of your characters and lines so that it looks correct.
Manage Colors
Down the Managing Colors Worksheet and read How to Manage Colors found the right and create the list below. Use Ctrl + Shift + 4 to take a screen shot to show me what you have done. When you have finished, you will save it as an .indd and a .pdf file, saving the files as LastName + FirstName + Period + Manage Colors and add it to your folder.

When creating layouts in InDesign, sometimes you need to use effects and be able to reuse the same effect(s) on several different objects, so creating object styles is a great way to work more efficiently. Start by opening the Object Style Panel! Go to Window > Styles > Object Styles. How can you use this panel to work faster in Adobe InDesign?
When you have finished, you will save it as an .indd and a .pdf file, saving the files as LastName + FirstName + Period + Object Style and turn into Scales when you are finished.

When creating layouts in InDesign, sometimes you need to be able to create complex shapes without leaving the program. This activity will allow you to explore the Pathfinder Panel and all of the options available there. While it is similar to the Pathfinder Panel in Adobe Illustrator, it has some key differences and contains a lot more options! Start by opening the panel! Window > Object & Layout > Pathfinder. How can you use this panel to create more dynamic layouts using Adobe InDesign?
When you have finished, you will save it as an .indd and a .pdf file, saving the files as LastName + FirstName + Period + Pathfinder and turn into Scales when you are finished.

Download the folder of Yearbook images, you will not have to use all of these. Your page should not only have a clean and organized layout, but good design as well. Remember that a Yearbook page should utilize the ENTIRE page, leaving no blank spaces and going all the way to the edge of the page.
When you have finished, you will save it as an .indd and a .pdf file, saving the files as LastName + FirstName + Period + MiniYearbook and turn in both Scales via AirDrop when you are finished.

While we are creating our designs using InDesign, we want to ensure that we are staying as organized as possible. Using the Layers panel effectively is a great way to increase your productivity. In this activity, you will use the directions located on Page 1 to organize the 2 Cookbook page spreads. This will also have your group objects, adjust your layers, and more!

Now that you have mastered creating Frames, and placing images, we want to make sure we can make our images fit the frames the best way possible for our design. Using the worksheet to the right, you will explore the Fitting options, how to arrange elements on a page using Key objects, and of the transform, move, scale, shear, rotate and flip objects.

When you are creating a document, the ability to create, edit and use Character and Paragraph styles will make you much more efficient when working. Using Character and Paragraph Styles will allow you to create a specific style or look for an element of the document and easily apply that style to all of the other similar elements in your document.

Being able to quickly create character in paragraph styles is a wonderful way to lead InDesign create your table contact for you. Understanding how to create this allows you to work more efficiently when doing larger documents. Use the reference Doc below and the video to help guide you.

You are able to organize and sort data in InDesign much more efficiently by using Tables. Download the worksheet to the right to learn to edit and arrange a table that already exists and how to create a new table. There are a lot of great uses for tables in layout design so adding this skill to your abilities is essential!

When using Adobe InDesign, the majority of the work you will do will beed to be exported to a file type that is usable by your audience, printer, clients, etc... so understanding the process of how to Export (⌘ + E) is important.
You will be using the cookbook spreads we have used before, you will export the 4 pages based on the specifications in the worksheet and place all the files in a folder labeled Last name + First name + Period + IDExport. Make sure to answer the questions on the worksheet and turn in all your exported files with this one

You will need to find 2 recipes to create a cookbook spread with, it doesn't matter what the recipes are. Start a new document, regular paper size with 2 facing pages. Your cookbook page spread must include the following:

You have been given a reprint of a book to design a book cover for. You will be creating the front, the back, the spine, and the inside flaps for this novel redesign. You will be picking a book that already exists, BUT your cover can NOT look anything like designs that have been done before. You will need to include the following in your design:

We will create a funny brochures on how to survive something using in Photoshop and in InDesign. You must have your topic approved by Scales before you can begin. Once you have your topic approved, you will need to sketch your brochure plan. Be Creative! Think of a new way to create something so traditional. How can you make it different?

You will be creating a Business Card, Letter head, and Envelope for a favorite Logo that you will create FIRST. You can pick any type of business and name to use for your logo/company. You will create your logo in Adobe Illustrator. This is a small part of the grade, so don't spend your entire time designing your logo!
Your goal is to create a well designed package of files, which includes a Business Card, Letterhead, and an Envelope, for your "client." Use the Elements and Principals of Design we talked about in class to a well laid out and creative design package. You will put these all in 1 file (3 separate pages) and create a PACKAGE of the file product. You will need to chose a local restaurant to create a Menu Redesign for them. You won't need to actually talk to the restaurant you chose, but you will be getting continual feedback from me. You will be using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create this. The layout for the menu must be done in InDesign, but you make any images or graphics in Illustrator or Photoshop. Try to not pick a HUGE menu so that you can get everything done in the time allotted.
You will need to redesign:
The Logo
The Menu (or take out menu)
As you work, save your project as a .psd or .id and name it correctly according to the rubric as either .id, .ai, or .png as needed. When you are finished create a folder named lastname + firstname + period# + redsign and turn in the folder into the folder for your class. Remember to add a png copy of everything to your portfolio folder! Review the rubric for this project to make sure you aren't going to lose any points!
