PROCEDURE
1. Look through topics generated from the last lesson
2. Encourage students to choose a topic that elicits emotion – it should make the reader laugh, cry, be scared or puzzled but not encourage sleep
3. Discuss your choices with a friend for five minutes and choose one
4. Review parts of a narrative
5. Pass out story webs and point out to students that the parts are included
6. Have students use story webs to brainstorm ideas for their topic
7. Assure students that this is still prewriting and is subject to later revisions
8. Give students about twenty minutes and then have them share with a friend for feedback

TOPIC Young Author’s beginning
OBJECTIVES: Students will write a good beginning for a narrative including character and setting description. Students will write narrative accounts that develop character, setting and plot. Students will apply tools to judge the quality of writing. Acq of Vocab 4. Interpret metaphors and similes to understand new uses of words and phrases in text.
PROCEDURE
1. As students walk into the room have them choose a fictional book that interests them from the fiction shelf. Remind students what a fiction book is and check that each student has chosen one correctly.
2. Have students read their book until everyone has one.
3. Have students search for a figure of speech in the first few pages. Students should identify whether it is a metaphor, simile or personification. Have students tell you if it gave a good character description, setting or both.
4. Point out that that they don’t give laundry list descriptions, they do weave descriptions in an interesting way, paint a picture with your words
5. Have students use their webs to write a good beginning, which includes a description of their characters and setting. Beginning must also include at least one figure of speech.
6. Exchange with a partner for feedback
7. Students will word-process the introduction before handing it in
8. Encourage students to revise and add details while they are word-processing
9. Students will start to work on a picture, which includes their main character in their setting.
10. Picture should include: good colored pencil usage, color in the same direction, use a ruler for straight lines, neatness, creativity, and background color.
11. Pass out final evaluation and discuss so students will know what they will be graded on

OBJECTIVES: Students will write narrative accounts that develop character, setting and plot, apply tools to judge the quality of writing,use revision strategies to improve the coherence of ideas, clarity of sentence structure and effectiveness of word choices, spend the necessary amount of time to revisit, rework and refine pieces of writing.
PROCEDURE
1. Read through and edit introduction.
2. Review story web; specifically problem and solution
3. Continue writing story making sure details paint pictures with words and reach people at an emotional level.
4. If you finish early keep working on your character and setting picture.
5. When two people are done they should peer edit. This means they may give their partner editing assistance and help them to realize if something doesn’t make sense.
6. Students will word-process this part of their story after their introduction. They may choose to go back and revise their introduction if their story has changed.
7. Students may need a word-processing review
8. Remind students to double space, save properly, run spell check, add a header with name and date and a footer with page numbers before they hand it in.

OBJECTIVES: Students will edit to improve sentence fluency, grammar and usage.
Use grammatical structures to effectively communicate ideas in writing. Use conventions of punctuation and capitalization in written work.
PROCEDURE
1. Using dialogue correctly is one of the most difficult grammar problems at this age, practice and direct instruction are needed.
2. Give a handout that reviews most examples of punctuation in dialogue.
3. Go over together pointing out confusing parts.
4. Review that you must have a new paragraph every time a new person talks.
5. Have a few fiction books on hand to show examples.
6. Have student volunteers share examples of dialogue from their stories.
7. Write them on the board and punctuate together.
8. Have students go back to their story and see how much of their dialogue they can fix on their own.
9. Exchange with a partner and have them check dialogue only.
10.Go back to the computer and edit dialogue

PROCEDURE
1. When the first draft of the story is written, it is time to add on the other parts of a book
2. Handout a young Authors detail paper.
3. Students will need to add three more parts of the book before final editing
4. Show students how to insert the first two parts at the beginning of the story
5. First is title page and then they need to create a dedication page. Encourage students to look through books on the fiction shelf for ideas.
6. What is required on these pages can be found on the handout.
7. At the end of the story students will add an About the Author
8. Ideas to include are on the handout.
9. Remind students to save and run spell check before handing in.

4. Students must at this point decide what size their book will be. Do not do a full size cover if you are creating a 6X8 book.

6. Demonstrate How to do a sign with print shop. Offer individual help.
7. Remind students about using a ruler and neatness

OBJECTIVES: Prepare writing for publication that is legible, follows an appropriate format and uses techniques such as electronic resources and graphics, write legibly in finished drafts, spell grade-appropriate words correctly, use conventions of punctuation and capitalization in written work, use grammatical structures to effectively communicate ideas in writing.
PROCEDURE
1. When students have finished editing, they need to have five readers of their story for final feedback, one must be an adult.
2. Prepare a final copy with a font of student’s choosing.
3. If readers have found any more mistakes, finish editing before formatting.
4. Complete a final spell check.
5. Change font, size and spacing to what is desired.
6. They must decide if they are using a 6X8 bare book or they are going to bind a standard size paper.
7. If they are using a standard size, they just need to add page breaks wherever they want pictures. Delete header, it is no longer needed.
8. If using a 6X8 book follow directions on the handout to print 2 to a page so it will fit neatly in the book.
9. Students will draw directly on the pages with the words and then assemble the book. This way if they make a mistake on a picture, the student can just reprint the page.
10. Students may now begin creating illustrations.
