I made a quilt in the shape of a heart and decided to make it into a pillow. In the spirt of valentines day used pinks and reds for fabric. A tricky part about this project was lining up the squares with the lines of the tringles.
I love being able to explore with new fabrics and new ideas. I also love the creative freedom of working with new types of quilts and projects.
I would love to go to a art college or a fashion college.
Getting to work with fabrics and quilts is great creative opportunity to anyone who has passions for the fashion industry.
Well, my initial plan was to make a Dorothy inspired dress, but after seeing the lack of gingham fabric, I decided on a Glinda dress. I spotted this beautiful pink fabric with silver stars and fell in love instantly. The dress I'm making is a baby doll dress with spaghetti straps. I started by creating the bodice and I'm currently working on hemming and attaching the skirt. On days I'm not working on my dress, I'm probably cropping sweaters or claiming I'm working on something else.
Fabric Arts class is really an opportunity for me to let my creativity shine. There's so much freedom that's allowed and I feel like that really makes the class feel like something you want to do rather than something you have to do. The environment is also very supportive and there's always someone ready to help you with whatever.
I've always wanted to pursue a career in fashion. I really want to be a designer when I'm older but I at least want to be able to construct my own garments to wear myself. There isn't really a plan B for me, it's fashion or it's nothing. I am fully confident in my ability and talent so I'm not worried about not being able to achieve my goals in the future. Anything is possible if you really want it to be.
Fabric Arts isn't just another class where you listen and try to retain information, it's a hands-on learning experience that allows you to take full control over how you want to approach things. Everyone in that classroom is willing and able to help and it creates an environment where everyone is on the same page.
Right now I'm just going with the flow on what class is doing. I'm going to start my small quilt soon. I want to work on something on my own over the next few months. I hope to learn a bit about hand embroidery and I want to learn how to upholster and recycle other fabric items.
It's a pretty flexible and calming class. There's a lot of freedom. As long as you follow the rough guidelines, you get to decide what patterns, size, etc.
After high school, I'm going to the University of Minnesota and majoring in business and marketing education. After college I want to be a business or FACS teacher.
It's something that's useful to know. Even if you don't want to make blankets, hot pads, etc; you can still use fabric arts knowledge to fix up clothing, upholster goods, and more.
Right now I am making a patchwork skirt or pair of pants- I haven't decided yet! I hope to make some more clothing in this class, and maybe learn more about textiles.
I really like that we are able to be creative in our own ways.
After high school, I'm interested in culinary, Sealife biology, political sciences, psychology & some of my dream schools are-
Chicago state university, Duluth Minnesota university, or university of the big island, Hawaii.
I would recommend fabric art to other students because you really get to show your creativity in your self-lead projects.
I am currently working on a checkered throw quilt. It is the perfect size for laying on the couch! I've spent almost two weeks matching up fabric and cutting it to size, and I am finally ready to start sewing! I am excited for the finished product.
The thing I love the most is that it gives me a chance to be creative! Projects are very flexible, and it gives me the opportunity to make what I'd like without limitations. I love the freedom I have throughout the classroom and the ability to self pace my projects. Quilting has given me a strong sense of accomplishment, especially when I finish a project I have been working hard on.
After high school, I will be attending the pharmacy program at NDSU. Although this has nothing to do with quilting, I have found the class enjoyable.
This class gives you the chance to be hands-on, as well as be creative. Fabric Arts is a very relaxing environment, and you can catch up with friends and sew at the same time!
Right now I am working on making key chains. I am making seven for all the colors of the rainbow. I plan to give them out to a few friends and family. I like this project because it's simple but something someone can use daily.
I love that we can all be independent and work at our own pace. If a project doesn't interest one individual there are so many other options
I plan on attending PCI Academy, which is a cosmetology school in Plymouth. It's an 11-month program that starts at the beginning of August. After this, I plan on moving to South Florida to pursue an independent career in the beauty industry.
Fabric arts is a great way for a student to learn a life skill.
