Eastman Nature Center elected to input an off-trail nature play area to encourage free-play and exploration while only impacting one small area. The off-trail play area was completed in 2009.

The cost of installation was kept very low as the area retains primarily natural features. Most of the built structures were created by eagle scout projects.
