Contest was held in Ponca City at the Wentz Pool


Miss Alcorn was the first candidate to go to Atlantic City with the title of "Miss Oklahoma" since previously, contestants represented cities. She was the hometown girl when she won the state title in Ponca City.  Unfortunately, she suffered an appendicitis attack in Atlantic City and did not get to compete.  

Joanne Alcorn was a member of the Osage Tribe, and the press surrounding her win was certainly “colorful.”  See the cartoon insert on the photo below.  There was also a caption of a newspaper photo saying, “winning against scores of her pale-face sisters…” 

Joanne married the famous singer, Pinky Tomlin and was the subject of his song “The Object of My Affection.” More about Joanne Alcorn:
