TIE!

Two twin sisters tied for the title of Miss Tulsa 1927: Virginia and Meredith Howard. They tossed a coin and Virginia won the right to compete in Atlantic City for Miss America, HOWEVER, both sisters attended and kept the judges in constant confusion. After the pageant, both sisters were hired by the Ziegfeld Follies.

Virginia was 4th Runner-Up to Miss America.

A newspaper of the time said:

“Judges in a recent local contest in Tulsa picked one of a pair of twins to represent the city at the Atlantic City pageant this year. She was Miss Virginia Howard, chosen from more than 70 girls. The other twin, MIss Meredith, will accompany her sister to Atlantic City. They are 17 years old. Tulsa hopes in this way to keep the title of “Miss America” bestowed in the 1926 Atlantic City beauty contest upon Miss Norma Smallwood, also a Tulsa girl.”
