This TED talk was very beneficial for my professional development. Jinni Forcucci discussed the importance of addressing racism in schools and building trust with students by listening to their stories. Her examples really inspired me to create a classroom environment where students feel heard and safe to share their experiences.
Mild to Moderate Support Needs vs. Extensive Support Needs: What's the Difference?
This podcast impacted my professional development by educating me on the differences between mild/moderate classrooms and extensive need classrooms. Knowing the differences between curriculum, class size, aides, eligibilities and cognitive levels, training, and assessments in these two classrooms is very helpful to decide my classroom preference.
Through this TED talk, Adam Saenz impacted my professional development by expressing the profound impact that teacher have on students lives' every day through making connections. Teachers care and support can truly shape students future and successes.
A college peer and I created two lessons for 3rd and 4th grade that used math manipulatives. Manipulatives are hands-on tools, like blocks, counters, or number lines, that encourage the students to explore math topics in a engaging and interactive way. Manipulatives make math more fun for the students by allowing them to see and touch the math they're working on. My peer and I presented these lessons to our class, which helped me to become more comfortable with working with manipulatives and have seen the benefits clearly!
Below is a math story that I created intended for first grade to represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 20. In the book, students have the chance to engage in a real world scenario involving math and practice their addition and subtraction skills. In the story, Max enters a candy shop on a mission to fill his candy bag with exactly 20 pieces of candy. Max ends up going over and the reader has to help him fix his bag!
With two of my college peers, I had the opportunity to get involved with the community through a Math and Literacy Family Night by creating an activity for the kids. For our activity, the students were given a bag that had two papers in it and a few pom poms. The first worksheet had a caterpillar on it with circles that were not numbered. There is a number at the end of the caterpillar, and the students goal is to place the pom poms in the correct number of circles in the caterpillars body. The second worksheet is a caterpillar and its body but each circle is numbered. There are circled of numbers at the bottom that the student can cut out and they have to match that with the number on the caterpillars body. I value community involvement greatly and this Math and Literacy Family Night was an incredible opportunity to do so! Below is our counting caterpillar activity.
As a pre-service teacher, I have recognized the importance and value of networking to grow in my professional and personal growth. Social media is a great resource to go to for tools and connecting with the educator community. I have learned that when social media is used correctly, it is a source to share ideas and learn from experienced professionals.
Below are some accounts I follow on Instagram that have been helpful to my growth as an educator. Their posts have provided me with strategies and resources that I can use for my future classroom. By engaging with social media in the edcuator community, I am building a network that helps my growth as a professional and equips me with the resources to make my classroom a impactful place.
