grass april 2017
This piece is comprised of about ten to twelve layers of paper, in about three different shades of green, each blade of grass cut carefully by hand, using an x-acto knife. Each layer was placed very purposefully so it had dimension and rhythm, blending some of the colors so it wasn’t just straight ombre. Due to lack of time to come up with a better idea, I had to settle for a dozen backwards raindrops on a plain blue background so I could get this piece in the art show, but I will develop the background a lot when the idea comes.
molded fiber observation april 2017
This was a very last-minute piece for a summer program application that was due probably the day after I made this. I needed some more observational work under my belt and once I found the subject, I laid out what I needed and basically didn’t move until it was finished. I successfully whipped this out in two or three hours and I’m pretty happy with the end result. There were some details I wanted to, but didn’t get to add, like the company name written all over the molded fiber, but I didn’t have the time or the effort to try and make that part look really good, so I left it as it was.
cherry tree may 2017
This was by far the longest piece of art I have worked on, maybe ever. I spent hours cutting pieces of pink paper into hundreds of tiny, organic shapes, then spent hours carefully placing each piece on the trunk, like a puzzle, so they all looked like natural, moving cherry blossoms. This layer-by-layer process was uber time consuming, but it made the end result look more realistic and rhythmic by taking the time to map out each piece. The idea to make a cherry tree came from observing the cherry tree that has stood outside my house for twenty years, which at the time of creating this, was in full bloom. It was a coincidence that I made a cherry tree for our cherry-themed art show. I think to continue this, I will add some more blossom layers to make it fuller look and more intense, and maybe work on a background.
complex may 2017
This is yet another sketchbook page that I cut out, of an apartment building from the perspective of someone looking in the window from outside. That was meant to let the viewer look into the lives of the subjects and guess on their own what might be happening within. When I removed the sketchbook page, I cut out all the negative space within the windows and glued it onto a black background. If given the time, I probably would’ve added more elements or made the whole thing larger so I could add more, and I would maybe use a different medium or more detail and shading with pencil.
miffed june 2017
This was our final assignment of the school year and I wanted to try a new medium, so in class I started messing around with Sculpey, making little heads and faces, and really loved it. I wanted to make a larger, realistic sculpture of an old man, with a very intense expression on his face and I thought anger would be a fun emotion to show. For most of the process, he looked a lot like Voldemort, but the more details and features I have added, the more real looking he gets. I have worked on it feature at a time until they come out realistic and I plan to add more face fat anywhere that needs it and lots of textural details like wrinkles, pores and maybe hair.
