Red Lights - October 2017 - Ink and Watercolor

We started this piece by picking a word out of a hat and finding a way to turn it into a relating graphic. I chose Amsterdam, which is a place I know nothing about so some research was required. My mom had traveled through the city during her time abroad following high school graduation and the most memorable thing for her was the Red Light District, where prostitutes were displayed in almost every window. This was what I heard about from anyone I asked about Amsterdam and figured it would make an interesting, though risky, piece. I used the letters as windows and inspiration from real pictures of girls from the Red Light District to put the final product together, using ink and watercolor to create the illusion of red light on the girls and the space around them.
