SMAN 71

(17 October - 30 October 2021)
For this fifth semester, I entered the Co-Teaching stage in the School Experience Program. I got another chance to do a School Experience Program at SMAN 71 Jakarta. However, now I am guided by a different mentor teacher. In this Co-Teaching stage, I have a role to assist the teacher in preparing lesson plans and assisting the teacher in teaching small portions. During this stage, I was also accompanied by two of my friends, Priscilla and Ellena. When we first met to discuss class schedules and materials to be designed, the mentor teacher provided the opportunity for me and my friends to fully teach tenth and twelfth grade students.
`At the first meeting, I was given the task of making a Passive Voice lesson plan and also preparing teaching materials on Passive Voice for tenth grade. Moreover, I have the responsibility to teach class X-F and XII IPS 4 independently. Besides teaching, I also have the task of observing teaching and learning activities in several classes taught by my friends or my mentor teacher, namely classes X-E, X-G, X-H, XI IPS 1, XI IPS 2, and XI IPS 3. I also have a role in making lesson plans and teaching material about Language Focus of Discussion text for class twelfth social studies. Additionally, I help my mentor teacher in checking Descriptive text and Auxiliary verb assignments, as well as providing or inputting grades on the Google Classroom platform.
During the two weeks of Co-Teaching at SMAN 71 Jakarta, I had the opportunity to observe several class X and XII IPS students. In these observations, I saw that in one class there were students from various backgrounds, for example, coming from different regions and in terms of belief. Actually, I cannot observe the cultural background of students more deeply because the teaching and learning process is carried out in online sessions, which makes it difficult for me to observe students in more detail.
To accommodate the needs of students, the mentor teacher and I have three main activities in the learning process where the first learning begins with a recall of previous material to find out students' abilities in the material they have studied. Then, learning is continued by delivering Passive voice material for tenth grade and Language Focus of Discussion text material for XII IPS. During the material session, I tried to explain the material with examples, then gave students practice questions to find out students' understanding of the material I had explained. After the material session is over, it is usually followed by game activities related to the material that has been discussed where the purpose of these games is to engage students in learning and measure student abilities. After students complete their game activities, they will be followed by a reflection session where students can reflect on what they have learned and students can also provide feedback for teachers to improve their learning methods or strategies. After the class is finished, usually the mentor teacher and I will hold an evaluation session where the mentor teacher will provide suggestions and feedback to improve my performance and method or strategies for the next session.
After getting an evaluation from the mentor teacher, I formulate or develop new strategies or activities to improve the quality of my learning. Usually in material sessions, I will focus on explaining material without giving students the opportunity to answer the questions. However, after getting an evaluation from the mentor teacher I tried to make a teaching and learning process focused on students, where after explaining the material, I would give examples of questions and give students the opportunity to answer or ask questions. Likewise, I started to utilize technology by inviting students to answer some of the questions in Padlet and holding quizzes on Quizziz or Kahoot to engage students in learning. Moreover, the mentor teacher and I are trying to apply learning strategies that focus on the students’ needs and on things that students are already familiar with. During a pandemic situation there were many cases that could be raised as material for example on how to wash hands properly. Therefore, from the pandemic case, students can learn English directly and increase their awareness of the importance of maintaining health.
In this Co-Teaching session, the mentor teacher and I use the Zoom platform to hold online classes and to collect assignments, students usually use the Padlet and Google Classroom platforms. Initially, teachers only used the Google Classroom platform to submit assignments, but I offered the idea of using Padlet so that students can gain more knowledge by seeing the insights from other friends. Additionally, I suggest using Quizziz and Kahoot to make students more enthusiastic and engaged in learning English. After several meetings, my friends and I used different platforms. I saw that students were more enthusiastic about learning, then it had a big influence on their activeness and increased their performance in learning in class. Furthermore, in my opinion, interdisciplinary methods or strategies can accommodate the various needs of students because students are trained to be more aware of real cases and make students more critical of what they learn.
