While joining the Micro Teaching class, I finally managed to design a complete unit plan on environmental awareness topic. I feel very proud and grateful to have completed this long process. Even though at the beginning I had a few difficulties when brainstorming and developing ideas for the unit plan, in the end I was able to dedicate this work to all of you. If you want to see my whole unit plan, you can follow this link My Unit Plan.
Before designing the unit plan, the first process that the Environment awareness group and I did was to brainstorm about what environmental issues we would like to discuss in the lesson. At first we thought about the environment around us and we saw a problem that the environment around us was very bad, such as lots of pollution, traffic jams everywhere, and very dirty river water. Through that trouble we decided to start the topic with Overpopulation. After the topic of overpopulation, we started looking for topics related to overpopulation and looking for the causes it causes such as waste production, air pollution, water pollution, deforestation, etc. And the end, we think that all activities carried out will have an impact on the environment and that can cause climate change.
After brainstorming, the next process we did was start looking for some references to support the topic of environmental awareness. After finishing drafting the unit plan, we finally consulted with our lecturer, Ms. Susi through via Teams. In the consultation session we were given a lot of new insights where the topics we wanted to explain were too dense so we had to look for more specific topics. After discussing, we will finally focus our topic on environmental problems around us and produce a final product such as a poster, video or essay. Besides Ms. Susi, we also got a lot of feedback from guest lectures, namely Ms. Ines where in designing unit plans we must pay attention to scaffolding so that students can understand their learning well.
After getting lots of feedback from Ms. Susi and other guest lectures finally we started to re-brainstorm about the topic of environmental awareness. We will finally focus on environmental topics that are around us and we will instruct students to produce a final product poster where students must persuade others to carry out a campaign to save the earth and the surrounding environment. After the unit plan is finished, we are finally ready to start the lesson with students being invited to brainstorm their dream environment, then students are invited to see the environment around them. After students understand and are aware of their surroundings, our group finally compiles a topic which teaches students to create campaign posters that are able to persuade others to save our earth.
The challenge that the environment group and I faced when designing the unit plan was the difficulty in setting up meeting hours because everyone had their own busy schedules and activities, so our group found it difficult to determine meeting times. In addition, I faced challenges when looking for additional references to support the topics I was discussing. I'm looking for books and journals from several educational platforms such as Google Scholar, ERIC, etc. Then, I also had the challenge of creating a unit plan that could facilitate students' needs and relate student learning contexts to previous lessons. However, after conducting consultations and getting a lot of insight from lecturers and guest lectures, I was able to think of a unit plan that I would associate with real life students.
The strategy that my group and I have adopted to face this challenge is that we often hold hybrid meetings where friends who are not busy can attend offline meetings in the library and those who are busy can monitor through online meetings. Then, in looking for references I tried to find some books about the environment in the library and also searched on Google with the keywords "Environment book" and "Waste production and Sustainability". Then I also watched various videos about environmental issues on YouTube to explore environmental material. In facing the last challenge, our group conducted a survey at the beginning before designing a unit plan to find out what learning styles, needs, and skills students need to improve in their learning. Then, in designing meaningful and contextual unit plans, I am guided by the TLRP framework where I relate my learning to real life students and previous student experiences. Then, in the TLRP framework it is explained that students must be able to develop intellectual, personal, and social resources in order to be actively involved in a broad and real social environment. To cover the TLRP framework, my group developed a final product that was designed to make students more aware of the environment and they had to make persuasive posters to influence other people around them.
