During the 4 months following the Micro Teaching class, I have designed a lesson plan on the topic of Environmental awareness. I feel happy and grateful to be able to complete this lesson plan, even though with the many challenges and feedback I received, I really enjoyed this long process. If you want to see my lesson plan work, you can follow this link: My lesson plan.
Before designing the lesson plan, my group mates and I brainstormed about the activities we would do in environmental awareness learning. From the results of the discussion, we want to start learning by asking about environmental problems that students have experienced. Then students will be invited to understand what environmental awareness is and what is the importance of protecting the environment. After that, the activity will be continued with an explanation of the problems that students often face in real life, for example when on public transportation, such as being crammed into a train or TJ. In this activity we want students to be aware that one of the causes of environmental damage is overpopulation. Then at the end of the activity, we plan to provide a fun game where students will be given some vocabulary related to environmental issues and then students will answer the word through synonyms, acronyms, or describe the word in front of other students.
The second process that we carried out was to consult with Ms. Susi as Micro Teaching lecturer. We had a meeting at Teams on Saturday, November 12, 2022. At the meeting there we got new insight that instead of asking students' problems at the start, it's better for us to build students' awareness of their dream environment. After students brainstorm about their dream environment, it will be followed by a questioning yourself activity by asking whether our environment is in accordance with our dream environment? After that my friends and I can provide materials related to the environment such as problems that occur due to damaged environment and what we can do to protect the environment.
The third process that my group mates and I did was to revise the lesson plan based on input during the consultation. After the revision was complete, the three of us held a follow-up meeting to ensure that every activity to be carried out went well and there were no holes. Then, we also practice teaching to ensure that tomorrow we are ready in knowledge, physically and mentally.
In carrying out the process of making lesson plans, I encountered many challenges such as I had to ensure that each activity was related to one another and students were able to follow the flow correctly. Then, I had a little difficulty when compiling activities that could be done online or offline. Besides that, in the process of making lesson plans I learned to respect every opinion, argument and idea that was conveyed by my friends. I also learned to be patient in understanding my friends' busy lives and learned to maintain good communication despite the confusion that occurred in the process of designing a lesson plan.
In handling these challenges, I implemented several strategies to assist me in designing lesson plans such as I started integrating learning with technology to facilitate students taking online classes. When conducting class discussions, I provide Padlet links for online students to answer and share their ideas so they can also participate actively in class. I also use the strategy of "Enriching as much knowledge as possible for myself" where I watch videos on YouTube and observe how to make learning interesting and engaging for students. Then, I also deepen my knowledge about the environment to help me better understand the material that I will bring to class.
