SMAN 71

(22 February - 5 March 2021)
In the fourth semester of the School Experience Program, I had the opportunity to become a teacher assistant at SMAN 71 Jakarta with the same mentor teacher. I feel that my experience in the School Experience Program is not much different from the previous semester because teaching and learning activities are still held online due to the pandemic situation. Moreover, the learning methods used by my mentor teacher are not much different from the previous semester. For this semester, I still have the same task, which is to make teaching materials for the tenth grade about narrative text and direct-indirect speech. Moreover, I am also in charge of observing the class and if needed I will usually open a room for classes on Google meet.
At the first meeting, I got the assignment to make narrative text material about the definition, social function, generic structure, examples and language features. After finishing compiling the material, I immediately asked for the mentor teacher's feedback regarding what parts needed to be added again and revised. After finishing the revision, the mentor teacher and I discussed the activities that students would do to measure their understanding of the narrative text they had learned. After discussing for a long time through Google meet, we finally decided to invite students to make their own narrative texts. Students can look through other resources such as Google or books, but they need to paraphrase a few sentences or conversations that they want to use. After students have finished writing the narrative text, students will be asked to make a Storytelling in the form of a video. Students can submit their Narrative text and video storytelling assignments through the Google Classroom platform which has been provided by the mentor teacher. The purpose of this narrative text assignment is to help students understand narrative text more deeply so students can know the generic structure and language features contained in narrative text. Furthermore, this narrative text assignment will also be an assessment of their English for writing and speaking skills.
After the narrative text materials were finished, I immediately made teaching materials about Direct and Indirect Speech. In Direct and Indirect Speech material, I explain the definition, the different tenses between Direct and Indirect Speech, the example, and describe several sentences that contain Direct and Indirect Speech in the example story from The Story of Monkey and Crocodile. After finishing compiling the material, my mentor teacher suggested adding some examples of Direct and Indirect Speech sentences that contain WH questions. Then, I immediately revised and looked for several Direct and Indirect Speech sentences containing WH questions from The Story of Monkey and Crocodile according to the mentor teacher's request. For activities, the mentor teacher instructs students to make sentences containing Direct and Indirect Speech.
For making lesson plans and teaching materials, my mentor teacher does not have a specific strategy because learning activities are mostly carried out online; it limits movement or learning that is carried out together. Therefore, my mentor teacher and I still use the same strategy, which gives students the opportunity to study and explore the material independently. Furthermore, the learning that is carried out is also more focused on things that are familiar to students, for example, such as making English storytelling videos for Narrative text assignments. The purpose of this video assignment is to train students to speak English and help them improve their English pronunciation and grammar.
For communication, the mentor teacher and I have good communication to develop lesson plans and materials; for example, when the mentor teacher asks me to help create new material, I will immediately brainstorm what things will be conveyed by asking for his feedback. Likewise, we also usually discuss learning activities after finishing delivering the material.
The activity that the mentor teacher and I included for the lesson plan was using the Quiz platform, which is able to engage students in learning, such as Quizziz and Kahoot. The mentor teacher and I can see that students look very enthusiastic in learning when teaching and learning activities combined with fun games. Besides that, fun games can increase students' interest in learning; for example, students play guessing games on English vocabulary. Same like the previous semester, I view the teaching profession as a noble job because the teacher's job is not only teaching students but also educating students so they can have a good attitude and respect each other.
