- Bust composition of a spotted cat. After having not completed an illustration of a feline for the last couple of months, I decided to do a quick review in order to keep my skill set sharp. Although I ended up struggling with doing cel shading on the fur (likely due to the darker color spectrum), I was happy with the realism on the character's collar and medallion. In future drawings, I am going to take advantage of Paint Tool SAI's texture options on each of the used brushes. Jumping over to the anatomical structure of the cat, I am satisfied with the flow of the fur, however, I am still attempting to find ways to better fit it with the parts of the body (i.e. face, chest). Nevertheless, this piece was a nice preface to my goals in the upcoming semester, which will further entail shade, color, and structure. (1/5/19)
- Bust composition of a Golden Retriever. Although figuring out the correct locations to shade is still a struggle of mine while drawing, I feel as if in this illustration I have improved on the definition of a muzzle on canines in a front-facing position, one of the most important targets to me this semester. In addition to this, I am continuing to experiment with different cartoon-like eye styles; in this piece, I attempted to incorporate a more noticeable glow within the iris, brightening the overall gradient. When looking at the final product, I am satisfied with the depth of the shading around the edges of the character, along with my addition of highlights on the character's cheeks and nose. In pieces after this, I am hoping to not only have gained more experience with the canine anatomical structure, but also have practiced a different cel shading method. (1/19/19)
- Composition of an open woods landscape at dusk. Reflecting on this piece, I feel as if I am doing well in my efforts to add depth to background elements! Completely drawn in Photoshop (with the exception of a small portion of the horizon), I have rediscovered techniques from the versatile chalk brush, which was used for the clouds, tree leaves, foliage, and pine trees. Although I wish I had added another branch on the foreground tree to support the large amount of leaves, I am satisfied with the levels of texture on the bark and the bushes directly below. For the clouds in the sky, I am still working on finding a more harmonious color palette, however, using layer blending modes, this turned out to be very strong. In my upcoming pieces, I am planning on taking more advantage of the default brushes, also using advanced settings for customization. This image will additionally serve as the new banner for the "Reflections of LIT" tab (now renamed "Journals"). (1/21/19)
