PS6: Reflect on their teaching practice to extend their knowledge, improve their teaching, and refine their evolving philosophy of education.
Evidence 1: Self Assessment for Peer Review form and reflections from conversations with mentor teacher.
Description: This self assessment is based from my thoughts around my teaching practice after discussing these topics with Lisa Bresler, my mentor teacher. After observing me for several lessons, Lisa and I discussed my strengths as an educator, and what aspects of my teaching I could improve upon.
Analysis: Such observations aide in shaping my philosophy of education as I reflect and develop my skills as an art educator. I am focusing on my lowest scoring areas - mainly around assessments, as a place to work on gaining more experience and exposure. My goal thus far has been to encourage my art students to create and enjoy creating, to not put too much pressure on themselves, and to be kind with themselves as artists. Assessments should not be evaluating the skillset of a young artist, but rather, should be a way to measure a student's effort, time spent, and growth. When students try new things, problem solve through experiences, and walk away from an experience having gained more knowledge of a subject, I commend them for their efforts and give positive feedback to reflect those efforts.
Analysis: Having the opportunity to surround myself with art educators, sharing and collaborating on issues that affect the art teaching world, is an invaluable experience. There are countless opportunities to learn, be inspired by, and reflect on one's teaching practice to constantly improve as an educator. I planned to attend the conference in Minneapolis in 2020 but unfortunately, it was cancelled due to Covid-19.
Evidence 2: National Art Education Association Conference Attendance, 2019.
Description: In March of 2019, I attended the NAEA conference in Boston to further my skills and knowledge as an art educator. I attended approximately 20 sessions over the course of the three days, with topics including: best practices in art education, classroom management techniques, engaging activities to bring into the classroom, creating an equitable space for students to learn, and many more. I had planned to attend the 2020 NAEA conference in Minneapolis as well.
