KS6: Artistic practices of creating, presenting, connecting and responding.
Evidence 1: Exhibit of graduate thesis presentation of research and resources.
Description: These images represent the exhibition of my thesis research. Along with a Pecha Kucha presentation, I designed and presented a visual representation of some of the data I collected. Part of my research included asking art teachers if they knew of any artists belonging to the LGBTQ+ community. 45 artists' names were given. I then found a portrait of each of the artists, a piece of artwork that they had created, mounted these images, and presented them on a large wall of the gallery.
Analysis: This exhibition is an all-encompassing example of creating, presenting, connecting, and responding. I designed and created an exhibit of these works to present as one larger piece. The presentation was available during the week of graduation, through the Pecha Kucha presentations and the graduation ceremony where an audience was able to view it inside the gallery. In speaking with many members of the audience, I was able to explain my work, receive feedback, and even suggestions for further work. In response to the data I collected and in addition to the exhibition of artists and artwork, I included several resources for my audience to interact with and take away with them. They included curriculum ideas, websites, signage for classrooms, and lesson plans. Not only were viewers able to see the work, but they were also able to take a piece of it away with them. This was one way viewers were able to respond to the work.
Evidence 2: Field trip to gallery
Description: Students in one of my week-long art camps participated in a visit to Burlington City Arts (BCA) gallery and studio. The visit began in the gallery where we were introduced to the artist's work, had time to quietly reflect on the work, and then had a group discussion on their thoughts about the artwork. We were then escorted to the studio where they were introduced to an artmaking activity and they presented their work as a class.
Analysis: I organized this trip to Burlington City Arts with the hopes of giving my students the opportunity to be exposed to artwork in a professional setting, outside of the classroom. I also hoped that they would be exposed to another at educator as I find it valuable to learn from many sources.
My students had the opportunity to create artwork with a new medium: gelli printing, and they were able to share what they made. They experienced artwork by a professional artist and were asked to respond and connect with the artwork displayed. This field trip provided the chance to create, present, connect, and respond, in a short period of one afternoon.
