PS10: Advocates for a rich visual arts and design education for all students. For example, through collaboration, evidence-based practices, participation in professional organizations visibly within the community.
Description: In December, 2019, I was elected the curriculum chair for the National Art Education Association's LGBTQ+ Interest Group. This is a screen shot of the webpage with board member photos and information.
Analysis: The National Art Education Association (NAEA) LGBTQ+ Interest Group elected me as their curriculum chair after learning about my graduate school research on the topic of inclusivity in the art classroom for LGBTQ+ students. One conclusion that I drew from my research is that art teachers are in need of resources, and so one of my duties as the curriculum chair is to provide curriculum to art teachers. Currently, there is a small collection of lesson plans, literature, websites, and other resources on the NAEA LGBTQ+ website that I have uploaded for educators to access. The plan moving forward is to continue to build this collection of resources for art educators (and all educators) to access. This position is one of the many exciting occurrences that I have encountered since completing my graduate research.
Evidence 2: Vermont Art Teacher Association (VATA) Membership.
Description: This is a card for the Vermont Art Teacher Association (VATA) membership. I joined VATA in 2018 and have been an active member since.
Analysis: As a VATA member, I have been attending the board meetings and volunteering to take on roles to keep the organization running. I participated in the annual VATA conference in 2019 by having a table of resources available to teachers and am working with the board members
to organize the 2020 annual conference. By contributing my time and energy to an organization that advocates for the arts in Vermont, I have joined a community of educators dedicated to advocating for a rich visual arts and design education for all students.
