KS3: Art and design as a mode of communication and a source of creative personal realization.
Evidence 1: Artist Slideshow / Video Series
Description: This slideshow and video of Nick Cave's art that I created is designed to introduce students to new artists. It includes various images of his work as well as a short video of him speaking about his artwork and from where he draws inspiration. This is one of many slideshows I created which could be viewed in the middle school hallway of Charlotte Central School. Other artists include: Mickalene Thomas, David Hockney, Zaha Hadid, Frida Kahlo, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Dawe, Kehinde Wiley, Rae Senarighi, Zanele Muholi, and Georgia O'Keefe.
Analysis: The artist slideshow / video series that I started during my student teaching at Charlotte Central School was an effort to expose not only art students, but the whole school community, to artists that they may or may not have heard about in the past. The presentation shows artwork by the artist but also a short video of the artist speaking about their work. It is invaluable to hear from the artists themselves about why they make the work that they make and from where they draw inspiration. This method of showing a short slideshow and video of artists is an extremely accessible way for contemporary artists to communicate their artmaking to students and entire school communities.
Evidence 2: Lesson Plan - Julián is a Mermaid / Self Portraits
Description: This is a lesson plan for first and second graders that I adapted from a self portrait lesson of Lisa Bresler's. It explores reading the book: Julián is a Mermaid by Jessica Love and creating self portraits that explore individual creativity and uniqueness - a message from the story in this book.
Analysis: Having students participate in a self portrait activity is a definitive way to give students a chance to express themselves. This lesson not only allowed for students to create a reflection of how they see themselves, but is also an opportunity for students to share something about themselves that they may not normally share. The lesson begins with the book: Julián is a Mermaid, which is about a boy who wants to dress up as a mermaid, rather than wear his regular, everyday clothes. Students are encouraged to add embellishments to their self portraits that they may not usually wear, no matter how different they may be. This gives students the chance to communicate self expression through artmaking in a way that they may not always have available to them.
