Make sure your HW is uploaded to BB for the Direct Quote.
Today we will be taking that exact same quote that you used for the direct quote to make another type of in-text citation called an Indirect Quote. An Indirect quote is when you take information from a source but put it in your own words (called a paraphrase when it's significantly shorter and broader than the original work or a summary when it's shorter but still includes a lot of the original detail). Here is a link to more of an explanation on, you guessed it, Purdue OWL.
Today we are going to be working on paraphrasing. Here is the direct quote from Monday:
Edward Queair says that military brats are often "presented as being the 'new kid at school,' confronted with small tortures that this entails" ("Children of the US Military and Identity" 133).
Quote Introduction" Direct quote in quotes" (Paranthetical citation).
Now, to turn this into an indirect quote, we have to take Queair's words and paraphrase them into our own words, but still keeping the original idea of the source. An indirect quote would look like this:
Edward Queair says that a lot of times military brats have to face many tiny horrors each time they start at a different school ("Children of the US Military and Identity" 133).
Notice that we still have the same structure as the indirect quote:
Edward Queair says that a lot of times military brats have to face many tiny horrors each time they start at a different school ("Children of the US Military and Identity" 133).
Quote Introduction Indirect quote in own words with no quotation marks (Paranthetical citation).
Now take the direct quote you did for HW and turn it into an indirect quote complete with Quote Introduction and a paraphrase of that quote and the parenthetical citation in the end. Upload to BB under assignment titled How to Paraphrase.
