An Engineering Biologist Now
I'm a research associate of Engineering Biology Research Centre Kobe University in Japan. My Indian name is "Mukunda", which was given by Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji in January 2020.
Ph.D. in Agriculture
I finished a doctor's degree in agriculture in 2009. My major was entomology and I carried out research on the relationships between pest insects and their natural enemies.
Born in Japan and Grew Up in Japan
I was born in Himeji, and lived in the east side area of the castle until three years old, and moved to Mitsu Town, Tatsuno City. I spent kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, and high school in the city. When I was a high school student, I was interested in reading topics on global environmental issues that were covered in English textbooks. And I got good grades in English, chemistry and biology. I wanted to study about ecosystems, flora and fauna from a scientific point of view and a global perspective, so I entered the Faculty of Agriculture of a university.
My Grandpa Was A Beekeeper Beside Working As A Postmaster
I was reminded of my childhood experiences of maternal grandfather's beekeeping when I was faced with choosing a laboratory and a theme of bachelor thesis. Also research and development on environmentally friendly pesticides appealed to me. I enjoyed my research life of the entomological laboratory more than I expected, so I decided to keep on studying in the graduate school of university. Although there were some difficulties and hard times, I could complete the master's and doctoral courses. During graduate school, I was keen on discussing nature and the environment with my good fellows from ethical and philosophical point of views at the self study group.
Traveling Overseas
I was sent to England and the Netherlands for job training at a foreign-affiliated company. I remembered the joy of using English, and became interested in traveling abroad. I was interested not only in Europe but also in Asia.
Spiritual Journey to India
Traveling in India, especially, that was a dramatic moment in life. Seeing the sun rising on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi washed away my fixed ideas, changed my outlook on life, and fell in love with India. I started studying yoga and Indian philosophy.
The Darshan of Sri Swamiji
In December 2019, I wanted to become a disciple of Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji and set out on a trip to Darshan (the auspicious sight of a deity or a holy person).
Fortunately I could attain the darshan Sri Swamiji. I met Sri Swamiji for the first time at the ashram in Vijayawada, India. I never forget Sri Swamiji words for me (or us).
'You are a scientist. '
'God sent me here. I descended here.'
'We are Datta family.'
Sri Swamiji accepted me as a devotee and gave me an Indian name, Mukunda (man who gives liberation). Sri Swamiji is only Guru (teacher) for my Self until now and from now on. I vowed so. I devote myself (Bhakti) to Datta, whereas I manage to balance my work with family life.

Lessons from Bhagavad Gita
During I was a graduated school student, I read the writings of Dr. Masahiro Morioka and Zen Master Jikisai Minami to organize my awareness of issues. I could look objectively into my adolescent self, who had a pale flame burning, overlapping myself with the protagonists of Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" in Camus's "The Stranger." However, I couldn't abandon projecting my emotion onto protagonists of books. At such times, I read the the scripture, Bhagavad Gita (translated by Dr. Katsuhiko Uemura) and I felt sympathy for Arjuna. I realized the danger of my mind, which tends to fall into dualism (Dvaita), such as "Existence or Essence". I believe that this is a grace from Krishna. Now I'm reading Vishwananda's Bhagavad Gita and Swamiji's Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavatam. And I'm chanting with devotees from several countries weekly online.
Kriya Yoga experience
Attended Datta Kriya Yoga Basic Course in March and July 2019; attended Atma Kriya Yoga Level 1 Course in April 2024
Photography
I found that I love photography. I exclusively takes photographs of landscapes, insects and local festivals.
