First of all, I thought they were going to play Hare & Tortoise which was the first winner of the Spiel des Jahres. I thought that was an interesting choice considering that it's from the 1970s. It is a great game. I haven't played it in years, but, if I remember correctly, there's some interesting math involved.
Instead, they were playing a much newer game. It's one in the genre that I consider a race game that the players bet on, then everyone controls the race, but they try to get whoever they bet on to win. Okay, that's not a great name for a genre, but whatever. The first game that I played like this was probably Daytona 500. I remember being confused the first time I played. "What color car do I get?" It didn't work that way, first you look at your hand, then you bid on a car and try to get that one to win. The Hare and The Tortoise is similar, but you just bet on an animal (Actually, you can bet on two. One is assigned and the other is your choice.) and nobody else knows which one.
The racing is interesting. There are some animals other than the Hare and the Tortoise. There's also a lamb, a fox, and a wolf. Each of the animals has its own movement rules. This really adds to the theme.
I enjoyed watching the usual group play. They seemed to have a good time. It's one of those games that I would like to have, but we don't need it. We have far too many games. Oh well.
