Essential Skill 7: Engage in civic life to improve society: Graduates will engage in political, social, and other activities to address issues that benefit society.
Civic literacy refers to basic knowledge about how government works and democratic participation. Civic learning combines the concept of civic literacy (knowledge) with the skills, values, and dispositions to participate in democratic life. The application of civic learning is known as civic engagement.
In terms of the Graduate Profile, civic engagement and community engagement are used synonymously. They are defined as engagement in political, social, and other activities to address issues that benefit society. When talking specifically about voting and other political engagement, the term "democratic engagement" may be used. Postsecondary and other types of institutions may have variations of these definitions, but the underlying them is that students use their knowledge and skills to address a political, social, or other community-based issue.
