Essential Skill 4: Interact effectively with people. Graduates will demonstrate both self-awareness and appreciation of people from other backgrounds, as well as the ability to collaborate, communicate, and work respectfully with others.
To interact effectively with others, students must first know themselves, acknowledging their backgrounds, predispositions, values, and beliefs. Such self-awareness, then, creates space to engage others with maturity and respect, whether in professional circles or civic life, seeking growth and outcomes that benefit society.
In terms of the Graduate Profile, interacting effectively with others will incorporate other Essential Skills, including communication and teamwork. An awareness of others’ differences, and the ability to appreciate those differences while working together to get things done, is what distinguishes this skill from others as preparation for graduates’ contributions to society.
