Active Learning is a teaching philosophy that repositions students from passive receivers of content (with the instructor as the “Sage on the Stage”) to active participants in the learning process, where the instructor may serve as the “Guide on the Side.” Lectures are shortened or non-existent, a flipped learning approach may prevail, students may flex into and out of small groups, project-based or problem-based learning opportunities may be included in the course curriculum, and/or other strategies that keep students active as learners may be prioritized.
